Finally been talked into buying an offroader. I've been advised to start with a 125, and i agree so i'm thinking YZ or KZ. I don't really like the look of the CR's.
I have a budget of around a grand so any advise or offers would be most welcome.

a yamaha serrow 225 is what you shud be lookin for will go anywhere and bullet proof engine great bike to start on and you will get your grand back when your finished with it pm Daithi he knows where there a couple for sale :augie AND ALAN DONT LET US CATCH YOU STANDING ON THE PEGS :rob :aidan

Oh your soooooo hilarious.:augie:D

Cheers for that. I'll give The kenobe dude a shout during the week.

what was the basis of the advise to go for a 125?

Don't you have a full licence yet?

Are you particularly light?

Are there some special restrictions in Ireland?

I'm not being funny, just not sure why you've been advised that.

Yam WR250, Honda XR250 Baja, Suzuki DR400, KTM? All pretty good starts, just make sure you get something with electric start as kickstarting gets pretty tiresome after a while.

Good question - I don't know.

Fully qualified to drive motor bicycles since 1994 - riding illegally for 14 years previous to then.:augie

I'm a mere slip of a lad at 13 ST.

Crap roads. The forrest paths and fields are smoother.

Funnily enough, the fella who advised me go for a 2T 125 has a serow 225 himself......go figure:augie.

Ah, he probably doesnt want you leaving him behind then ;)

Serow seem pretty good, the seem ideal for shorter riders in fact and 125's are plenty capable, I've watched a couple of enduros where they've lead a field of much bigger bikes.

They'd make a good starting point, but I wonder how long it'd be before you out grew it? I started on a XR250 Baja, which was great but within a year I found that I wanted a little more and I've now got a WR450.

The 450 is beyond my skill level but it's nice to have that little bit of extra power, when things are going well the 450 allows me to ride over thing that on the 250 I would have had to ride through.

The buggest thing I can see is that while you are learning, you'll get it wrong a lot, so you want something light enough to pick up (all day long) and with an electic start - kick start as a back up.

oh and body armor is useful :D

Hey CP,

Do yourself and a favour and buy a proper off roader :)

As it happens i have 05 KTM 300 exc for sale, 1800 euros

yz125 or CR ...

Don't do it you will draw too much attention to yourself in the forestery up the road from you , get a stealth bike ie something quiet , a good starter bike is a KDX 200 if you can find one and simple to maintain if you want to trail ride maybe a serrow or xR250

Cheers Philip, Serow looks like a serious option at this point.
That bike lift is seeing plenty of action by the way. Cant believe how i managed without one till now.:D

CP if the fella is, who I think he is,then he has a TTR250 nice tall bike but it wont go where a serrow will go:thumb.Anyway the Serrow is the bike to go for and I bet, you will regret not getting into off-road sooner:blast

Have to agree with the Gunner.

Loud exhausts, scramblers and enduros blasting through the forestry roads are bad news for us all. It's only a question of time before the forestry will be policed and riders will be in court. Coillte just don't want to know about bikes using the forestry, because of the antics of a hooligan few.

Buy something quiet, switch off the engine and chat with any walkers that you meet, don't blast past deafening them and showering them with gravel.

Time that we got an action pressure group together for trail riders to talk with Coillte. They made provision for mountain bikers, some of whom are as dangerous on the trails as our hooligan fringe.

spotted few nice drz's around but again they are good bike heavy and for some reason have unreal loud exhaust.

agree that full on enduro bikes are too loud for green laning. only good for private land and designated enduros.

there is a klx300 for sale in gumtree in and also gumtree belfast

great bike, not too loud and ask phil gunn these are great bike. sadly kicker only

too truee. i am sick hearing lads on other bike forums in ireland talking about how they taking mx bikes up hills.

i went un through wicklow few times and stopped and chstted to all the walkers. even have pic some where of a group walkers that we were talking to laughing there ass off with me burined under the bike as it fell over on me while moving it around

met collite rep who was not pleased but as we stopped and talked, explained we were up wih a nice photographer lad who was also on bike he seemed to be happy enough to let us on our way as everyone he met had not even mentioned le t alone complain that there were 3 bikes up the hills

as for the contacting coillte on behalf of bikers i thnk this is goos idea.eve to discuss with them certain routes and specify limits on the bikes such as noise level and have be rpad legal. coillete have give a huge secyion of land to 4x4 club as long as meet certain crieria, have be insured and club members and now everyone is happy

so how about getting club with paid membership to hire a large portion on un walked and for use by bike members only
