Hi. I may have mentioned that I’m planning a solo trip to Poland this year, well I’m looking for routes/options and advice for getting from Luxembourg through Germany taking in the Black Forest and visiting Colditz castle.

Would ideally like sweeping countryside routes rather than racking up the miles on motorways.

I’ll worry about the next leg of the trip a bit later on, just want to concentrate on the German leg for now.

Thanks.

Do the B500 out of Baden Baden
Great sweeping road, towards Freudenstadt

The B48 south of Kaiserslautern is my favourite road. Sweeping bends through the forest and plenty of places to stop and chat to other motorcyclists , if that’s your thing. Leads down towards Baden Baden.

That sounds like it’s not you that will be planning your holiday but UKGSer.

There are enough Black Forest and Luxembourg posts, routes, GPX files on this forum to sink a battleship. Have you looked at any of them? There is even posts on how to go about creating roads to ride. Here’s one; why not give it a go, for YOUR holiday?

Anyway, the entire ‘must do’ Black Forest area is shite. I read it here.

No? OK, let’s start with the basics, which so many people forget to tell us:

A. When are you going?

B. How long do you have in mind for the journey: Luxembourg > through Germany > through the Black Forest > Colditz castle. A day? Two days? Three? A week? A month? As it’s not too direct and quite a long way.

C. Are you, as so many often are, looking for great things to see and do along the way and biker friendly accommodation, too?

C. Have you bought so much as a map?

PS Have you satisfied yourself about the dangers posed by wild pigs and wolves in Poland yet?

OP, you are asking for a route Luxembourg > Black Forest (mooch about and do stuff) > Colditz castle, which is about 750 miles, avoiding motorways and doing twisties.

This should give you a very roughed out idea. It's a GPX file or at least I hope it is, as I am having to guess on my phone.

Back home, I have had a look at what Kurviger spat out, using nothing more than my phone.

Considering it’s about 750 miles long, that an algorithm and a phone created it, it’s not bad. Can it be improved? Yes, of course it can. Does it need to be checked? Most definitely. But there you go, it’s what you asked for…. Or most of it.

Tap on the map below, it should open. You can’t break it.

Forget the B500- completely overrated , lots speed restrictions and speed/ noise checks now….
trundle along the Elsass on the French side and then to Colmar…..cruise over to Freiburg, stay there a day or two, good base for getting into the Black Forest and then continue to Lake Constance…
This obsession of bikers, foreign mostly with the B500 is getting on all peoples nerves that’s why they started even noise. He ks now,

The thing is.....
Every person will have different idea to this road or that road..
Bloke could be on a scooter too a Harley roadking or perhaps an over weight Gs..

Forget the Black Forest if you’re going to Colditz. It’s in the wrong direction. Either go and enjoy the BF or Colditz.not both.
There’s enough nice roads in the BF to fill a few days.

I suspect old JB floated the suggestion of the B500 out of devilish entertainment.

The route a couple of posts up, misses out chunks of the B500.

Lower down, the route does pick the B500 up again but, switching to MyRoute’s Michelin map layer, shows how easy it is to miss bits of the B500 out, should you want to.

As the route in the post above shows, it does create a bloody big ‘V’ shape, when going from Luxembourg. But it does not render it impossible. It all depends on the time available and, not least, why the bod wants to go there in the first place. Maybe he has a cuckoo clock fetish?

...that's life.
Typical at Bol D'or 24 hours @ Paul Ricard circuit in south of France, in the late 1990's...........the A26 autoroute out of Calais, all the way to Marseille in the south - some 500-600 miles, all the Peage booths were coned off, to the far right, for 'Motos' and no tolls levied from early Friday morning to midnight on the Monday, for bikes.
You just went as fast as you wanted
So Motos, just filtered to the right lane and went through the booths at 50-70 mph, with Gendarmes present and then on exiting the peage area, stand up wheelies (MotoGP style) were encouraged by the Gendarmes

Speed limits on the Peage were abolished for Motos, for that 'Bol' weekend and you could ride at 100-120 mph all day long without fear of being nicked and a pending prosecution and more often than not, there were bikes 3 abreast in the outside lane, another 3 bikes abreast in the middle lane (and all cars/lorries strictly kept in the inside lane) - all riding at 120 mph, side by side and every now and again, a rider in the fast lane would brush against a bush in the central barrier and a cloud of dust and leaves would cover everyone, temporarily

Those days were certainly, the best and without any harsh restrictions.................we've lost all that, with the 'nanny states'

Shame you missed those days :JB

Used to be great, not anymore sadly
