Loose Spokes

I had one rear that didnt ping at my 500 mile running in service, one year later and only 3030 miles and now i have three plus the original one and two front spokes loose, They told me they had torqued them and they would be fine, No way was i leaving with that fob off so i am now getting two new wheels under warranty and a loose switch unit replaced.

I would demand a new wheel , what is going to stop the rest loosening.
Just had my 2018 Rallye TE serviced at Jeffries and 7 spokes found loose on the front wheel.

They just tightened them so I’m hoping they will be ok going forwards.

As I understand it they come loose due to incorrect torque on the grub screw that retain them. Part of the service bulletin as well as tightening the loose spokes is to re torque all of the grub screws to spec so no more loose ones develop. .

Get them to fit alloys...... lighters, and the spokes dont come loose.
far better IMHO. I dont do off road on my 1250GS, and if you’re honest, neither do most others (apart from a light track or two, and alloys will cope)

I put a thread on a few days ago about Bahnstormer at Alton and this very subject ... loose spokes on rear wheel for a new 18 plate GSA with 7,000 miles that I have put on it. They called a few minutes ago .. new rear wheel AND new front wheel .. cheap rear tyre and no cost for loan bike etc .... one can argue and say that a new bike shouldn't even have a problem like this but I am of the mind that sometimes things go wrong BUT what pleases me most is the dealer attitude of "very sorry we will sort that to the best of our ability ..." .and they have done :):)

Which is all well and good, however it shouldnt be happening in the first place. This is a very well known problem and should have been sorted out long ago.

It obviously benefits you to have the wheels replaced, but bear in mind that the dealer charges the the labour to BMW to fit the free to them wheel. I had a wheel replaced under warranty by a dealer during a 6000 mile service. Now I know that the wheel was running true and all the spokes were tight. The reason given was it needed slightly too much weight to balance the new tyre I had them fit and therefore the wheel it’s self was not in balance - even though the wheel left the factory in that state. Seems to me that booking workshop hours played a part in this decision.

Final check of my 2018 GSA today before a tour down to Prague next Tuesday

Found loose spokes in the front wheel so contacted my dealer, Alan Jefferies

Asked me to take it straight over and they found 4 loose spokes on the front and 3 on the back.....the back wheel was replaced at 6.5k due to 11 loose spokes!........bike now on 9.8k

Al the spokes in both wheels have been re torqued and should be fine although I was advised to check daily!

12k service when I get back and any loose spokes = new wheel.

Love riding the bike but if I can't trust the wheels could be time to get rid.

Trouble is 'What to get!'

Mike

My Yamaha S10 has done x5 the mileage with no issues (except a loose battery terminal caused by me and a misfire due to dirty fuel)

i lost (as in fully came out the wheel) 4-5 spokes on my S10, yamaha didnt give a shit either where as BMW do go out their way to fix it.

you're not meant to apply any thread lock to spokes but it could be an option. the low grade stuff

this link has the torque values for everything including spokes and locking grub screws, also says spoke loctite should be used.

Interesting the grub screw torque has been increased from 1nm to 2nm from my 2011 GS to the LC.

Interesting video just come up on fb of a gs in Israel where front wheel collapsed 2 weeks after being replaced

Interesting video just come up on fb of a gs in Israel where front wheel collapsed 2 weeks after being replaced

His name is Nir Shiler, the replacement wheel which collapsed was brand new. Rear spokes adjusted. New wheel replacement in July. A basic BM GS is around £24 in Israel and £3/4K for both insurances.

He was part of an organised tour in the Negev. His words:

Hii freind,
hope the English version is better now
Well guys, I am still alive! But it was inches between me and riding with angels.
I own a 2018 GS1200, had all maintenance token care by local dealer, just recently replaced the front wheel UNDER WARRANTY and got some spokes straighten on the rear wheel.
A couple of days ago, I was riding with some of my friends, and god helps me, that’s what happened.
all I know for now is that life is fragile, I just keep my wife and children so close to me' I really don’t know how is it possible for me to hug them???
BMW Motorrad , the bike went to the local dealer in Israel, eversince I have no words neither from you or them, this is a disgrace! I am so ashamed I need to post it on facebook, cant you pick a call or just visit?
What on earth would you do if you had to explain a widow with 3 orphans that situation??!!!
Never ever I thought I would get this behavior from such a high-end (??) motorcycle manufacturer.
And for all of you guys over there reading my post, check your bike, and after your local dealer taking care of them – check again!!
Always keep yourself protected!!

Personally now treat spokes as part of the daily check routine especially when touring , mine were done last september at service time but a couple on each wheel now have a dull sound when checking .
Will get sorted next month

Until recently, spoked wheels collapsing has never been a problem.

Surely this must be as a result of inferior materials being used??
