Lost confidence in Tourances

8,000 miles?????

Are you riding like a lady???

I've only ever had 7,500 from a rear, and even then it was twitchy on white lines and overbanding. And to be honest, I was never fully convinced about them anyway, especially in the wet.

That's exactly what I mean. I never got that kind of mileage out of them before - which makes me wonder if the compound changed for something harder, but offering worse grip/handling. Normally get around about 7 - 8k on a rear Tourance, but thats down to nothing - this one still has plenty of tread left.

Is it possible that you have been using different rated Tourances? I seem to remember a thread on here saying that only certain rated Tourances were now available, and that one type had been discontinued. Perhaps the current ones last longer, but are not as "sticky" as the other ones.

I thought higher rated tyres just had more solid side-walls :nenau I've used H and V rated Tourances before now with no noticeable difference in wear or handling.

Check the roundabout surfacing - they get a lot of screwing as it were - from HGVs using them .Can remove the chips which provide grip if it is laid with hot rolled asphalt. Stone mastic asphalt can give problems also if just laid hence the slippery road signs you see on motorways in England where it has been used and that's on the straights.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm getting Bahnstormer to check the bike over tomorrow ... you never know, I might even get the crash bars swapped out on warranty as they've turned to rust after seeing one day of rain!

The rounadbout must have been slippy, but as I wasn't hammering the tyres still should have coped.

Just about start the IAM course ... maybe they'll teach me how I should have been riding in the rain.

Im new to the GS world only having my machine for 5 week, (04 1200) and thank god its not my beloved gs thats not at fault, but i think tourance rubber.
I have a near new rear and a new front. iv done 2000 mile and still almost like new, but thay are coming off by this friday:mcgun as i have lost confidence in them, almost to the piont i wont go out if its likely to rain!!:thedummy
This is the only bike i have ridden that will step out on corners..
I think ill have a shiny new pair of BT020s,:bow

A good job none of you rode across Ireland with us at the weekend in driving rain. 100mph + on TKCs:eek: Tourances would have been bliss:thumb

I had an IAM Associate bale/bail out on me last week because it was raining ..... It didn't impress me much. Particularly as he didn't tell me until he phoned 10 minutes after we had arranged to meet and I was stood in the rain, waiting.

If you can learn to be smooth and progressive in the wet, you'll be a star when it's dry.

If anyone is unhappy with their Tourances but want something similar I can heartily recommend Pirelli MT90 Scorpion S/T tyres....I find them better than Tourances, with much more feedback and predictibility.
They`re on both my 1100`s and I get 11,000 - 12,000 miles out of them.

The newer MT90 Scorpion A/T has a rave review from a KTM 990 riding friend too.

I decided I was going to commute using the bike whatever the weather that day ... that will teach me!

I'm off to Patagonia with Globebusters in 2009 so my thinking is, I need to get the mileage in all weather before I go, because I wont have the car option whilst on the trip.

I suppose it was better to learn my wet roundabout lesson here, with no injuries, rather than in Sout America.

I once had a Tourance let go with no warning whatsoever. I was going reasonably gently. I stopped and went back and inspected the road and there was nothing apparent to cause it - no diesel, lousy surface, etc. Only time it happened in about 45k miles on Tourances but unnerved me for quite some time because I wasn't pushing it and there was no obvoius reason.

I binned my bike on a roundabout last Monday.
I ride the bike and the same route every day and I reckon it was something on the surface. I'm on TKC's and I've found they slide a bit before they go but not this time!
I've just chalked it up to experiance and fitted some of steptoes headguards :D
Oh and not one of the feckin cagers in the long line of rush hour traffic stopped to help or even wound their window down to shout "are you ok". :spitfire
I had a few instances with tourances "snapping back" when sliding around in the dry  last year so changed to Continental Escapes. Much better :thumb2

How much for the Tourances??

If you can't ride in the rain............you might as well give up in UK and move to sunnier climes

I think the gs is going to give me a new lifestyle, having moved on from the plastic rockets!. I fancy the idea of off road some point in the future:eek: , so will be keeping the tourance in the garage. but Thanks for the offer johnnyboxer:thumb .

The cars behind me had no choice as the bike and I where sprawled across both lanes of the exit. The lady in her Z4 behind looked she had just witnessed my demise ... thought she may faint by the look on her face! The guy in the other lane was brilliant and helped me get the bike off the road.

As I was assessing the damage a number of people asked if I was alright

So I take back everything I've ever said about people in Swindon!

As for the tires, they will be replaced with Pilots, just a question of when.
