Hi
I have a 2008 GS which I have only done about 500 miles on. I have noticed that it appears to be quite jerky on the throttle at low speeds and wonder if this is normal. My older R1150R was a smooth as silk at low revs.

Any advice much appreciated.

It could just need a bit of TLC in setting up the valve clearances and throttle synch.

Has it only done 500 miles in total, or did it have a previous owner? The engines get a lot better with use, so it probably just needs a few more thousand miles of running in (say 15 or so) before it really settles down and smoothes out.

Let's talk again in 5500 Miles or so. I have a 2008GSA at 7000 miles, and I would say it is one hell of a smooth ride, compared with the F800ST I used to have. It should become a bit better after 13k miles.

Like they say, it's way too early to compare or judge. Your engine will be new and tight and as likely as not could already need the throttle bodies balancing as the cables initially stretch. It'll take at least 10,000 miles for the engine to bed in and smooth up.

However, the engine on the 1200 is 'jerkier' than the 11xx. I think it may have a smaller flywheel for starters but I found you do lose the low rev' smoothness of the earlier bikes and can't as easily plonk along in town at low rev's and a high gear. But you'll quickly adapt and get used to it.

They are a bit jerky when trying to ride at slow speed just on the throttle with no clutch slip - my 2005 is the same - HOWEVER, if you dealer is very, very good at servicing and gets the valve clearances set exactly the same on both left and right cylinders AND gets the throttles perfectly balanced then a lot BUT not all of this jerkiness goes away.

Thanks for all the replies - looks like its a "they all do that" scenario. I will see if I can get the TB and valves done at the 6000m service. After that I will probably do them myself as I did with my 1150.

My 2006 Gs was fine but then suffered from said jerkiness after being serviced. I wondered if it was down to a software tweak.

new 1200 versions are built for speed and performance, not wobbling along on an old tractors like an 1150
