Over the past couple of rides I seemed to have lost the clutch side lower bolt for the alternator cover. Tried to order one yesterday with a well known BMW parts supplier but was told they could not identify the part I was asking for and suggested I measure it. So, thought I would ask the forum what the part measurements are or even the part number; if anyone knows please?

Edmund, if you can, take out the bolt on the opposite side of the cover and measure the length of the bolt from the underside of the head to the end, this will give you the length.
The width or M-number is the diameter of the bolt (not the head). If you can determine these measurements it'll be easy to buy any number of fasteners off well known auction sites. The thread pitch is the only other variable, but it seems to be a standard pitch for this size of bolt. Someone will be along in a minute with an exact figure no doubt.

.....that'll be me then. If you go onto the MAXBMW website you can see exploded drawings of all parts together with part numbers and costs (in US Dollars). Alan

I had my engine timing cover powder coated because of corrosion from the bottom bolt on that belt cover. Some weeks later, I had to replace the timing shaft seal (I damaged it the first time around). It was all too clear that the sharp edge of the plastic cover had actually fretted into the new coating. There was no way that edge was ever going to clip of the ridge on the timing cover so I trimmed it off and put washers under the cover bolts between metal cover and belt cover. This should stop water collecting and stop the plastic fretting into the metal finish.

So while you are in there checking out that bolt length, whip the whole cover off and check for paint damage to the timing cover.

Thank you, part identified and ordered.
