Lower screen

As you can see it provides ample protection... :)

@ Joker

Thanks for your more then helpfull info into lowering the standard screen.

I have obtained a second screen for the same purpuse too, but was not brave enough to cut it just yet!

I am looking forward of your report on the results without the Tobernators (since I don;t have those..)

Thanks for your pictures. ! In fact, it made me to register to this site too, just for your posting allone!! :D

Greetings from the Netherlands.
Ton

Hey Ton,

Just go ahead and cut it down - if you feel unsure, cut a bit at a time, try it out and see how it feels.

Unfortunately I've not removed the Tobinators yet - mainly because of lazyness. I'm currently running the screen with Tobinators on lowest setting.

:D

Hi Joker

Couple of questions:

1) Somewere above you posted that you could take the tobernators off. Did you?
2) With this mod, are you now in full clean air with your head or are there still turbulances / buffeting?
3) What would happen if you would make the screen even shorter?

Tnx

1) No I haven't done that yet. I've been too lazy/busy. It's very easy to do though. And I will try it at some point, probably next time I fettle with the bike.
2) There's still turbulence and buffeting, but much less. If I want I can lower the screen so that the whole of my helmet is in clean air. And sometimes I do that. I'm currently running the screen so that the air hits the top of my helmet. I might lower it just a bit more. :)
3) The shorter the screen is, the shorter the air will be "thrown", so to say. That is to get the air over your helmet (or wherever you want it) you'd have to go faster.
With a taller screen the air get's "thrown" over your helmet easier. A shorter screen would also need the screen to be more upright to have any effect. If that's what you want you can cut it down even more than I have done.

Hope that's of any use, if not, let me know and I'll try to explain a bit better :)

Cheers!

Joker, It seems that you have done what many of us have wanted to do... Great pics, thanks.

1 . Have you been down the motorway in the rain yet ? How much protection do you think your shorter screen will give ?

2. My other bike is a little tsr200 which has does not provide any wind protection. Obviously, there's no wind noise or buffeting. However, when going 80+, due to wind, i get a constant pulling of my arms. Is this the case on your GS too, due to your reduced sized screen.

Hiya! :)

1) Yup, several times. Depending on how I ajust the screen the water seems to flow differently.
The best option is to position the screen upright and high, and go fast. That'll keep the direct spray off the visor (and probably the whole helmet), and it's very easy to ride.
However, if you want, you can lower the screen so that the wind pushes the water off the visor instead, equally useable.
The difference from the original sized screen is that the water was always pushed down by the turbulence - that in turn meant that I got water pushed into the inside of the visor if I wanted to ride with the visor slightly open.

2) Nope, no problems at all. The screen is big enough to redirect the air well above my shoulders, also, the GS has got the hand-protectors, and on the sides of the screen there's the little "cones" that direct air (a little bit) past the bars.
I do 50miles to and from work everyday, and that's absolutely no problem. I've also done several long stints on the motorway with my missus on the back, and had absolutely no problems. :)

If you feel unsure, cut it down a little bit at a time :) (I'm not that patient ;))

Im even less patient.....I cut mine right down to the line where the sticky out bits are, if you can imagine that. So its like a flyscreen now. Hated the old screen, like this a little more! I may chop something off the sticky out side bits at some stage.
Drawback is that with a cutdown screen it looked terrible with my TT perspex light guard, so that came off.
As Joker says, cutting dead easy. Mine needs a polish etc but its scratched to death already.
Thanks for the encoragement, Joker
:D

Cooool! Pictures Pictures Pictures! :D And keep us posted how you get on with the "draft" ;)

Im dong a few other mods too so no pics as yet....

BTW screen choppers. A new screen is £43+vat. Given the cost of aftremarket screens my frmae of mind is chop away and buy a second one for touring purposes. Thats what Im doing.

I rode with the short screen today. Lovely not having that thing in the way and more of a enduro or motard feel. I was thinking about no screen but the bike looked unbalanced and this will keep some rain off the clocks. Lots of fresh air blast at 80 (couldnt get any higher today) but just like a naked bike I guess.

Will post pics soon. Looks good from the side, odd form the front due to the 'wings'. And also possibly I could have been more ambitious with the shape.

Just for you guys here you go. No its not my garden. Yes theres some grounds maintenance issues around here  ;)

As I said before I fancy lopping the sides off a bit as I'm not sure about the front view, alhough its a fugly bike head on IMO whatever. Thing is its worked well and a little more chopping here and there might result in a cock up....as these things tend to.

:D

Some more observations:
1. Cut down and in the low position my head is in clear air but its noisy in my Tour-X. But there's no buffeting. Its noisy from 40mp up. The wind force at speed is quite severe but ok. Tested to 110mph with a Tour-X is a fair test. It would be tiring for any distance.
2. In the high position its less nosiy at low speed, maybe a little less blast at higher speeds. Its subtle.
3. But....In both positions I feel like Im riding a bike again and not in a conservatory, as Joker put it. For back roads I much prefer it and I feel I'm out there in the air. You'll know what I mean I expect.
4. Because of the noise, I wondered if I had created turbulent air. So I went back out for a blast with no screen. Noise slightly different, seems not as bad at low speed (30-40) but at high speed didnt it kick in. And the blast  . So even cut down my screen does 'something'. I dont remember any naked bike this bad. V odd.
5. Because of 4 above I would have serious doubts about the Wunderlich flowscreen at any road speeds. Perhaps an off-road gadget?
6. The best solution for me is probably a cut down for low speeds and a normal screen for my distance travels. TBH Ive always thought my Tour-X quiet with a normal screen, probably as Im not tall.

Anyhow, hope thats useful for somebody together with Jokers info.

Am I pleased I did it? Yes I am. Just for the looks and the feel on the back roads riding, which is where I want to be riding :D

Looks great Rich. Spray it the same colour as the beak and it'll look even better:thumb

Funnily enough I was thinking about tinting it. I read on some Chav websites that to tint light lenses etc the best approach is to get a spray shop to do it with any paint you like thinned right down. Apparently some even specialise in that.

Chav websites are a fabulous resource for painting and attaching-things-problems....
:D
