How to insurance contents of panniers and back box on a day-to-day basis in the UK? I was recommended upgrading my home insurance but are there any companies who specify in this when you're just out and about in the UK? Had a recent issue coming back from Europe which my travel insurance covered but has made me more conscious ...

for items like cameras then adding them for all risks on home insurance is probably most cost effective but do check the policy covers storage in a vehicle including motorcycle locked luggage.

you could also look at bundled bank accounts with gadget cover as part of the package that might include travel and breakdown insurance as well. An annual travel policy will have cover for UK trips but read the T&C carefully.

for other stuff, like clothing, I am only taking cheap stuff from the likes of Mountain Warehouse so not bothered about insurance. My Android travelling 10" tablet cost £70 so again, not worth insuring as under most excess amounts. By far the least stressful policy is not to take expensive shit on a trip! Leave the tiara at home, you don't have to dress for dinner.

If the items are insured anywhere, it’ll most probably be through your conventional home owner’s comprehensive policy, assuming you have it.

As Wessie says, read your policy as theft from unattended vehicles is often:

A. Sublimited.

B. Is predicated on the vehicle being locked.

What is it that is so valuable, that you leave it unattended in your motorcycle panniers?

Cheers for the Info guys, it's much appreciated, I'll check up on the home insurance over weekend, thanks!

Badlands gore tex with heated clothes presuming it's winter and a sweaty lid presuming its summer, definitely wouldn't leave any tech in there again though :( although rigging a Taser security system sounds appealing for any wood-be thieves wanting to open my panniers but I don't think the police would approve this one :)

Your Bike Insurance should cover you for luggage & contents. The same as Car insurance, if things are stolen from your boot or other secured areas of the vehicle.

I would not make that assumption. My Devitt policy states in the exceptions to theft cover:

"Loss of or damage to accessories and spare parts by theft if your motorcycle is not stolen at the same time."

Hence no cover if the lock on my topbox is forced open and my bag of soiled boxers is taken.

As Wapping and I have stated above, personal possessions are covered by home insurance, if you have paid the additional premium to have cover away from home.

Phoned Bennetts about this and they pretty much told me the same as what Wessie just wrote unfortunately. Yearly travel insurance might be the way forward depending on the home insurance policy.

Did you ask them to add cover or what did you do? I want to insure my panniers and top box.

Richard, can you please attach the thread? Thanks

This relates to the insurance of the panniers / top box themselves, as asked for by Sly in post #9.
