I'm looking at getting myself a new Macbook but just wanted confirmation that Mapsource will work. I've done a search but to no avail.

I believe there is a version for Mac (beta).

Check out the Zumo forum, they're usually up to date.

Mapsource will only run on the Mac under a virtual machine like Parallels.

There is a native version called Bobcat which is in beta but which works OK - not quite as well as Mapsource yet. It has fairly frequent updates though.

Maps need to be converted using a supplied conversion tool before they can be used with Bobcat.

See here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3885

Thanks for the info. I use Mapsource a great deal as I tend to plan routes on the pc rather than the GPSR so it doesn't look like a Mac is for me just yet.

Just done the same thing... download bobcat for your mac....

convert the mapsource files on your pc to work on your mac.. then move the converted files to the mac.. it will overlay the maps onto bobcat...

Finally worked out how to do things... laptop running windows is kept at the side of the mac for doing stuff like adding co-ordinates, as at the moment bobcat won't do that .......

still learing ;)

All Macbooks now have an intel proc and should come with Bootcamp installed.

All you need is a copy of Windows XP and away you go.

You simply hold down the 'alt' ket when booting up and choose between 'Mac' or 'Windows'.

Mapsource is one of the only progs I need to boot into Win Xp these days.

Just make sure that you give at least 20gbs to the Windows side of the partition on Bootcamp (the setup is easy)-My v9 of mapsource is over 9gb alone !!

Macs

I believe Apple are revising their Mac books within the next couple of months, so you may want to hang on a bit.
I run Boot Camp on my intel iMac at home - it works a dream, not that I use Windows at home very much I have enough of that at work. However if you install Windows it must be a pucker copy. I bought mine (XP Home) from MicroDirect for £50.

Works fine with a none pukka copy !!

Mapsource won't run on a Mac.
Install windows via Bootcamp, which comes with the mac - don't bother with Parallels, its a complete klutz and entirely unnecessary since your mac will run windows as well as any other PC without help.
There is a Garmin program for the mac which will allow you to download the maps to your GPS

I've just spoken to Garmin and they tell me that they released their Mac version of Mapsource in February of this year and it can be downloaded from their site. Any views on this?

It's all true :)

Oh you want more? OK Project Bobcat is a product under development, a beta which has been available since Feb with several updates since, you can do some stuff with it but it is not yet the finished article and significantly less comprehensive than Mapsource, looks nice though :D

That will be why I can't find Mapsource for Mac on the Garmin website. Is Bobcat good enough to create routes and upload to your GPSR? I'm looking at changing to a Mac but I don't want to have to keep hold of a pc too.

Almost, you can't add waypoints and you can't search for places, but you can do basic routing by pointing at source and destination.
Expect to be watching the beachball (eggtimer) a lot - especially if you use the hand tool.

Very wise of you :).
Keep your copy of windows and install it on the mac via bootcamp (included with the mac) and the mac will run windows at least as well as any Dell. You can then install Mapsource or any other windows software on the windows partition.
Jobs a goodun'
