Main stand refurbishment

My stand is looking pretty typical and I'd like to tidy it up. What's the preferred method for this, paint or powder coat?
Holts have a tough paint option and then there's the Hammerite option although I'm not sure on spray vs brush applied or which provides the closest finish to original.

Not used this before, anyone else?

I did think about applying a stone-guard base coat.

Perhaps an engine enamel is a better option??

It seriously aint "tough'.

Hammerite aerosol satin black gives a good finish.

I removed mine and got it powder coated….it was £10 and is still perfect a year on.

I had mine powder coated a couple of years ago and put a lizzard skin on the cross bar and it's still like new.

I had to alter a side stand i bought off ebay because the one that came with the bike was a bit long for the sloping pavement outside my gaff.
The bike was bolt upright on the sidestand, so i had the ebay one shortened.

Painting it i used Holts primer initially, then i coated it with Hammerite Barbecue paint as a base coat then Hammerite smooth Black to finish
It can take multipul coats of Hammerite smooth Black with out a base coat to have the desired finish this can cause runs from experience and probably poor spraying technique

Powder coat it then put helicopter tape across the middle piece.
If done right it will last for years.

The stand is, the springs not so much. The 'washer' method spring removal seems as good a method as any.
Can be seen on Cymarc stand/spring removal on U tube I think.

This worked for me….hook the top plate on with both springs attached.

I then did the springs by tying a strong shoelace to the lower hole in the bottom plate and with only the lower spring already attached I stretched it so the plate popped on. I then looped the shoelace around the hook of the upper spring and pulled that one on.

For both I had hooked a tie down on the shoelace and then tied a loop for my foot. I then lay down, pushed with my leg to stretch the spring and guided the plate and spring in with my hands.

It’s a faff but once you get your foot/loop in the right place it’s fairly easy.

That stuff is not petrol resistant , personally I would either get it blasted then galvanised , primed and painted ( hgv chassis paint is tough) or powder coated ,however, the issue with powder coating is that the powder coating WILL get damaged and come off the bottom of the stands pads

Cheers all, it's looking like either hammerite or powder coating then with something to cover the cross bar.

I used hammerite satin black on mine, plus the side stand. Came up really well, cheap as chips and easy to touch up.

Also put a neoprene survival duck sleeve on. Definitely works. £1.99 again on ebay

Didn't have to refurb centrestand as did the above from new

I did alter a spare sidestand to relocate the deployment lug as it was fouling the underneath of my foot with the BMW pegs at lowest setting

Used Hammerite 5084778 Metal Paint: Satin Black 400ml (Aerosol), was just over £8 off Amazon

Nitromors the old paint off, real easy as there was a wafer thin coat

I was pleased with the result as first time spraying anything, little look of peel but I may take it off and do it again. Wanted to see how durable it was. Seems pretty tough

Although the springs are smaller on the side stand, they are still a bastard to get off and on. Mole grips were very useful.

me too - neoprene sleeve from new. take it off 2/3 times a year to clean under and add ACF... still mint after 12k miles

I used a loop of thin line and a decent screwdriver or bar to get the springs on, you get a lot more purchase that way and it takes seconds to do.

Just touch up with smooth hammerite from a tin. No need to remove stand from bike. Do mine every 2 to 3 years. Cover the middle bar with a protector.

Instruction says do 3 / 4 coats 15 minutes drying time between

I did 4 coats or maybe 5 in one day leaving an hour between but it was touch dry as quick as it says

Left it overnight before refitting the sidestand

Although not in direct line for stones like the centrestand, it has stood up well to use over 7 months and remains unmarked
