I have just received a "Vehicle Recall Notification" from BMW concerning all R1200 and R1250 (K5x series) bikes.

It details a change to the maintenance plan as follows (and I quote).

  • Replacement of the cardan shaft every 60,000 km (cardan shaft mileage, not vehicle mileage). This replacement will be carried out at the expense of BMW Motorrad over the full vehicle lifetime.
  • Maintenance recommendation every 20,000 km: check cardan shaft health (new tester-led diagnostic method) and grease splines. This recommendation is not standard content of the maintenance plan and will only be carried out at your request. A refusal on your side will not be documented in the service history.
Sounds fine to me although I don't understand why greasing the splines isn't just added to the maintenance plan.

Oh, and there's a wee insert for your bikes manual too.

Just had one as well, as you have to ask for the 20k check & grease does that mean we have to pay for that?

Al.

Just received mine too. Think this was covered a few weeks ago on here as I asked my dealer about the manual insert & they were no wiser. At least sending it out to every registered owner ensures we all get one!

DevonAl, my 1200 is booked later this month and you do have to pay for the check and re- grease

Just had mine. The announcement was made last year I think but has taken its time to filter down to many people. Cardan shaft check at next service with free replacement if out of spec, and drilling of the final drive casing to add a rubber grommet/drain valve which invariably will end up like many others getting pushed (easily) into the casing never to be seen again until rear is stripped. I spoke with a BMW tech about this and asked if they'd improved the fit, but he said "sadly, no" and they have had lots in with it missing, lost in action.

Mine just arrived, for the GS I Pex’d in December. Nothing for my GSA 😂

That's an excuse to ride even more! I got a new one on the last recall as i was over the mileage threshold, so in a couple of years i'll get another new drive shaft for free.

I got two for previous bikes, so if anyone has these I'll forward them om

Looks like they're using an old address list as I got mine at our old address which was changed about 6 months ago

they sent the original letter with the circlip & inspection service bulletins to my old address just after I arrived at the new address
new letter with the service schedule has arrived at the new address. I changed the V5 details in Oct 2023, so they are fairly current

my understanding is:
the first inspection where they drill the hole is a BMW funded service bulletin
greasing splines always chargeable
subsequent inspections are chargeable
new Cardan shaft if needed paid for by BMW and automatically replaced at 60,000km/37500 miles

Well, well......every 36K so? Major service time and a free new shaft. Looks like trying to get some business back from independents at that mileage???? every 36K etc

I got my free shaft with drain hole for free recently. No questions asked at 45,000 miles.

Don’t think I’ll need the second free shaft.

But I only received a letter for the circlips.

It’s been well publicised for months regarding the free 60,000 km shaft renewal for a wide range of bikes.

You'll probably need to stump up for bearings though...My shaft was changed FOC upon inspection last September by BMW. 18000 miles on a 2015 bike. Result

Got my too, although I'm well away from 36k at present, still nice to know when I do reach the 36k the shaft will be replaced at no cost.

Free drive shaft?

But the inspection each year will likely costs £200.
you miss one and that will be their get out clause.

Call me sceptical, I've not had anything for free all my life I'm not going to start now 😂
If i get a free driveshaft i will show my arse to king Charles!

20,000 check is advised, but not compulsary, replacement is not dependant on the check being done, my cardon shaft was changed FOC last year due to being over the mileage limit ,perhaps you had better make sure your arse is ready for inspection :p
