We use an iMac and an iBook and have a Wanadoo broadband connection with the standard USB modem that wanadoo provides. At present to use the internet on either computer you need to unplug the modem and replug into the other computer. It would be far mor convenient to have wireless internet. for this job I managed to get an old netgear wireless router (WGT634U).

The internet input into the router is a network style jack therefore the wanadoo modem does not fit. I've also heard the information going through the USB is totally different to what would be going throught the network jack anyway. Is there anyway of getting an adapter to get around this problem, or will i have to purchase a wireless thing with a modem built in?

Thanks for any advice!

buy a cheap ADSL modem with an ethernet output. I did this recently as I already had a wifi router that I connected to an NTL cable modem at my last address. The one I bought is an SMC 7901BRA - it has a USB port and an ehternet port. So, you can use it as a router for hard wiring 2 computers or, like me, just as a modem to connect into your existing router. I bought it from Amazon for £25. I see they have sold out: no surprise as it is an excellent product for that money.

Searching the web I couldn't find one under £30 now. E.g. http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=422 but I can't vouch for the seller as I've never heard of them.

I've been trying to get my pc working with wireless, but haven't quite sorted it out yet. For some reason, I need the ehternet cable pluged from the router to the back of the main unit to get my 'tinernet to operate. :nenau So it's not really wireless at all yet. :mmmm But damned if I can find out what's not done right. :banghead:

Well its nice to know there's a £30 option instead of a £85 option! Which seems to be quite unusual in computers!!

Wireless does seem to be rather hit and miss! hopefully, this will work!!!!

Cheers

Have you actually got a wireless PCI card in your PC, or are you using something else ?

Why not get from Orange formally Wanadoo there new LiveBox which is Wi-Fi (this is free) and gives you the option of running upto 6 PCs wireless but you will have to buy an adaptor for each PC that you want to connect to the web. The Livbox also gives you free phone calls to all telephone numbers starting with 01 or 02 in the evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday. Check it out on www.orange.co.uk
