Map update query

Bit of a duffers question but can anyone tell me if by purchasing garmins Lifetime mapping, that both unit AND maps on PC get updated.

Reading their website gave me the impression it does only one item.

Also, I always thought (wrongly apparently) that any map update overwrites the old ones but garmin says you delete them, presumably ALL the European base maps installed on the unit and PC.

Both get updated. On the PC the older version is left on, on my 550 it removes the old and leaves the new one there instead. I'd guess the 660 will be the same.

You can download a single Lifetime subscription updates to as many PC's as you like but you can only tie it into one GPS device. Change the GPS device and you will have to resubscribe.

If you have two GPS devices, you will have to subscribe twice. If you have three, it will require three subscriptions etc. etc. etc.

When you download the updates, the original map version(s) remain on the PC. You can select each from the dropdown menu in Mapsource. Whether you chose to delete them is up to you, but maybe take care if the updates are simply extensions (literaly updates) to an earlier mapset, which may require the original to be retained. That being said, you can't really break it. If the deletion means your new maps have vanished, simply reload.

When you upload the updates from the PC to the GPS device, it automatically removes earlier map versions from the device. Which is fine.

Depending on your broadband speed, the entire process can take say three hours. 90 minutes to download from Garmin to your PC and another 90 while the PS uploads the updates to the GPS device. Dial-up or slow broadband may well take much longer.... see threads. It is though remarkably smooth and logical to follow and I am a PC numpty.
