Looking for a way out
I have a Quest 1 and a 2610 with maps Europe City select v6 & City Nav v7 respectively.

I'm not that bothered, but if the price is reasonable I'd like to update the maps.

I've got the City Navigator Eur 2008 DVD from Garmin, but:
- I still don't know what the cost of the upgrade is - I'd rather not load it until I know. am I thick do does the web site really not say
- will I have to pay for both units?
- Does this DVD do both units?

I used the Gamin support to ask, but no answer in 7 days and now the web page to show my queries doesn't work. Not really very impressive. :spitfire

Anyone know the answers?

The actual update disc is free - what you pay for is the unlock code which is about $80

I did this last week.

$88.12 for which I got a bill on my credit card for £46 exactly.

The DVD can be used for any number of units but you'll have to pay for an unlock code for EACH unit.

Although the bumf you get with the DVD states you can share with 1 additional unit I've been informed in fact that now - you can't.
I've tried & I can't.

I'm now running one unit on v6 & one on 2008.

can you load the software / maps to determine whether the upgrade is worth it? I'd like to load it onto the computer and run throgh some sample routes. Don't need or want to load onto the Quest - just to see the equivelant sizes of the maps that I would need to load. That way I can determin whether to spend the beer token on the software or .....beer

I don't mind paying the ~£50 if I can get a reasonable amount on my quest, but Garmin can't tell me the individual map sizes.

This may seem a strange request but I've got a Quest 1, and it is a superb bit of kit apart from the memory limitation. I don't want to upgrade the unit, just the mapping. I know it will do the UK for me, but it's the once or twice yearly European jaunts that I want to be able to load and I can't get Garmin to tell me the loaded map sizes for a typical run (they did volunteer to do this, but haven't responded once I sent them the routes from the last year).

CN 2008 whole of UK and Ireland = 18 maps and 141.6mb

CN v8 non NT the same area = 18 maps and 172.8mb

CN v8 non NT, same area, autorouting box unticked = 18 maps and 118.3mb

That help? Not yet upgraded the non NT v8 yet, but the autorouting tick box is disabled

Metroguide Europe v9 with routing data as modified by MetroGold :
291 map tiles,204.7 Mb. these maps are not locked , can be bought cheaply and apart from not normal but soon got used to instructions at roundabouts work very well.
I don't know untill i get my CN 2008 non NT how large the tiles are but V9 non NT is 197 MB and 55 tiles so not good for a Quest1

Thanks JOhn & Navig8r,
I don't have a problem with UK mapping, its more of a concern for the the size of the occasional European routes.

For example last year, I ran down through France, Switzerland and Italy to Southern Tuscany on one trip, on another it was France down through Spain to Granada. Oh and I usually return by a different route - thus requiring more map tiles.

I usually put in the map tiles along the route, plus the areas around the places where we stay for more than one noight. 240MB disappears pretty quickly this way. I'm running v7, so hence my concerns for the latest mapping.

Cheers

This is why I suggest Metoguide,If you would like to post a route I will plot it in MG and let you know how much space the tiles around it take up.

Metroguide, in terms of tile size, is similar to City Select v6 plus a little for the extra POI data.

I ran a Quest for 2 years and found that the tile sizes in City Nav v8 made long European trips not possible. I then discovered the Metroguide and MetroWizzz solution. Since then I upgraded to MetroGold which converts loaded Metroguide Europe and allows it to be used in Mapsource in exactly the same way as City Navigator (MetroWizzz is an external application and a 'little bit of a faff'). Only cost a few Euros to buy the licence for MetroGold. The only downside is that the audio instructions at roundabouts can be a little vague, a quick glance at the screen shows the correct exit though.

I'm not sure if MetroWizzz/MetroGold will support Metroguide 2008, I'm sure Garmin will try to nip this in the bud.
