A couple of weeks ago in preparation of next week weeks EU trip I updated my maps, in doing so the Garmin needed me to install a SD card. Now I have France, Spain, Italy etc on the SD card and UK, Germany, Poland etc on the unit hard drive. When using BaseCamp it does not like when I plan a route which involves crossing between Germany and France (which is going to be 70% of my tour). Does anyone have a solution rather than planing to the border each time and then having to select the other storage unit and plan from that side of the border?

Use mapinstall in basecamp to install the maps relevant to your trip on an SD card. The file size limit is 4GB.

Does this mean you are reading the maps from the device to plan the routes in Basecamp?

If you are installing maps to a Garmin device using Garmin Express then use the install to computer option.
All the maps will install on your pc and be visible in Basecamp and you can plan away across the whole of Europe.

But wherever the maps are installed on your device shouldnt matter, so you’ve another problem if there’s an issue routing over borders.

I'm guessing here but the older garmin units like the 660 have a map size limit of about 3.2-3.3gb on the device as the operating system takes up some of the total 3.86 GB avaliable on the unit.

The 660 and my old nav4 got their last map update in July as the NT maps have been discontinued and only units using NTU maps like my 3XX units and XT, will receive future updates. For units that can't take all of Europe or Western Europe, Garmin Express offers the ability to install pre-defined regions of the total. But you can install the complete mapset on your computer. On the unit however you are a bit stymied if your route/routes cross the borders of the pre defined map subsets offered by Garmin express. In this case the best option is to use mapinstall in basecamp to select the map tiles required by your routes and install these on the device or an SD card installed on the device. The only gotcha is that in Garmin units the SD card format is limited to Fat32 which means that there is a 4GB file size limit on the tiles you select to make a custom map.

I'm using the maps on the device. I'll try installing the maps on the PC. Cheers

I found MapInstall but there is no option to select countries, after finding my device it returns a message stating "No unlocked maps were found for this device."

The first thing to do would be to install your full mapping to your computer via Garmin express. Don't run Basecamp at the same time. One interferes with the operation of the other.

Thank you for confirming it’s a Navigator V device.

From memory, you should be able to load the whole of Western Europe (not that you’ll need it) onto an SD card, which the device will be able to read. If so:

1. Take out the SD card from the device.

2. Take a fresh, brand new, decent quality SD card, fresh out of its packet. 16 GB will be more than adequate.

3. Connect your device to your home computer.

4. When prompted, insert the SD card into your device.

5. Install the whole of Europe to the SD card AND to your home computer.

Why the AND?

That way you’ll not have to connect your device to your home computer, each time you want to just create a route.

OR

Leave out the AND bit, and just install it all to the SD card. Then connect your device to your home computer each time.
