Mapsource crashing when routing on Italy map

i failed to answer fully .
i have a start point , and extend the route in short jumps , SAVING after each jump.
i think MS can't cope cos there are so many roads in northern Italy .
and plan on an ave speed of 30mph .

Did you ever get this sorted? I'm having exactly the same problem even with the latest maps installed.
Hi mate, the last time I was in Italy was in 2023 and it all seemed to work ok then and I see you have had some further responses regarding this problem.

This is a weird one. I got mapsource working with stability in my Windows 11 machine. In and around Milan. But not much good to you Number 6 with a windows 10 Machine. So I dug out an old (December 2011) Windows 10 machine that I had lying about that i haven't booted up since maybe September last year.

I booted it up and tried Mapsource on the machine. It routed fine without crashing in London and Paris but not round Milan it crashed after the third or fourth waypoint, despite enabling the same Windows Compatibility settings as I had in Windows 11

(Stupid route round Paris no crashes)

I opened Basecamp same map NTU 2026.20 and it routed fine round Milan. Again a stupid route to see if it would crash. It did not, Basecamp was stable.

I downloaded Italy from the freizeitkarte website and give it a try. Mapsource routed fine round Milan with the freizeitkarte maps enabled using Mapsource.

and Mapsource did not crash with this mapset in use rather than NTU 2026.20

But it would not create a route around Milan (or Italy) without crashing using NTU2026.20. I deleted the relevant registry instances of the maps in the registry editor and tried again but still no luck.

In the meantime this computer had not been booted for a long time and was downloading updates. Windows 10 was "Sundowned" by Microsoft in October 2025 but I must have applied for extended security updates that run until October 2026. This machine as well as millions of others does not meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements.

And because the machine had not been online for a looooong time it was downloading loads of stuff!

After this lot had loaded and a few reboots to get it installed Mapsource now functions on this Windows 10 Machine. As you can see I was able to click around and create a route without Mapsource crashing.

Mapsource must need some files that are contained within the Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 issued since last October. If you are running a Windows 10 machine without being enrolled for Extended Security Updates then it hasn't been updated or secured since October and you are running security risks with your machine with regard to Online Purchases and Banking etc.

The Italy issue is weird but it looks like you can get Mapsource and Italy to work on Windows 10 if you ensure the OS is right up to date. I'd put this machine to one side to turn it into a Linux Machine or Chromebook but never got round to it!!

Yes Basecamp had no issues with the same maps in Windows 10 even before the machine was updated.
