Doe's anyboby know if you can plan a route on Google maps and then transfer it either to mapsource or direct to a sat nav (Zumo 660).
I can plan a route on Google to Southern Spain in a matter of minutes but on mapsource it takes for hours, is overly complicated and if you breath on the computor too hard the whole route disapears into space so you have to start again:tears

Yes try a programme called TYRE, free download. I use it for my Tom Tom and I believe it can be used with the Garmin as well.

If you're asking it to do the route from the top of the UK to the bottom of Sapin it will take ages as it calculates the 100's of options. And would you ride it in one go? Unlikely, and as I found out early on, it's much better / quicker to do the routes on what you want to do that day.

There agin I might have the completly wrong end of the stick :blast

I believe there is a thread about Tyre on here somewhere.

to send google maps to your device you need to log into google by setting up an account

set out your route in google maps after you have plugged sat nav into your pc, make sure your sat nav is in pc mode

when your route is sorted click the send button on the top right hand side, its to the right of the printer option

this then should open another window, on the left hand side of this window it should give you an opton to "send to"

pick the sat nav option and follow the instructions

As said above, do a separate route for each day. Far more flexible, route calculation and recalculation will be far faster as well. Your Garmin may choke straight away on such a long route anyway.

I tend to plot by the day but by the half day can be useful if you have multiple route options for either half of the day. With ferry crossings finish routes at embarkation port and start a new one at disembarkation port.

Just because Google maps follows a certain route don't expect your Garmin to do exactly the same, there will be differences in the routing algorithms.

Route plotting in Mapsource isn't that hard though I will admit a little persistence in learning it's quirky ways is required. Once you've done that it's almost as easy as using Google Maps and it's using the exact same mapping data as installed on your GPS.

Here's a short video tutorial, not all you need to know by a long shot, but a starting point.

Have to agree with Bumpkin, Mapsource is the best mapping for a Garmin sat-nav, It does take a while to get the hang of, but stick with it, it's worth it.

Whats this Basecamp software?
Was using Quest and Mapsource quite happily, bought a Zumo500 and upon connecting it to PC to register it, all mapsource (in fact the whole Garmin folder) disapperaed.
So I downloaded and installed Basecamp - looked funky but wasn't sure if it was right stuff for bike use

so

downloaded latest Mapsource, on installation GArmin folder reappeared!
More confused than ever but suspect my enthusiasm to get using my new satnav was blurring my vision.

Basecamp is reputedly replacing Mapsource, but when/if is anyone's guess, I played around with Basecamp, but still prefer Mapsource.

More info can be found on the Zumo Forum.

Thanks gents for the replies I guess I should perservier with mapsource but it is certainly overly complicated. GS:jager

Basecamp is far superior to mapsource on my apple. I agree, mapsource seemed to give the "rolling ball of death" all the time. Basecamp is much quicker - although mapsource on my 15 year old VIAO is still quickest!

Don't bother as your Zumo won't handle that length of route!

Odd, as I can create very long routes without too much difficulty and reasonably quickly in Mapsource. Let's see what we can do to help you:

Can you tell us how you are doing your planning, please.

What are your 'start' and 'end' points?

Are you simply clicking on the 'start' point and then on the 'end' point and asking your PC / Mapsource to calculate the whole single entire route for you?

Are you asking it to, for instance, avoid toll and major roads, favouring minor roads throughout the entire length of the journey?

I assume that you do not intend to ride the whole route in one hit? If I am right, are you at the same time asking the software to go through fixed points where you intend to stop?

In short, exactly what are you asking the software and PC to do for you?

Hi Wapping, I not trying to do the whole route, I've split it into 3 seperate routes for each days riding. I am trying to follow a specific route so am having to seach for each town in turn rather than just drag the route to where I want to go as I can in Google.:nenau

Why don't you use the garmin road trip software that comes on the CD and then send it to the device?

I have done this many times without any issues.

Sorry, don't understand, if I could run Mapsource on my Imac I'd be very happy.

My understanding is that Roadtrip isn't supported anymore.

Basecamp is the only Garmin mapping that will run on the Mac...and it sucks. I am seriously considering either buying a netbook or putting Windows XP on my Imac just so I can run Mapsource.
