More advice please required from you nice people :)

Refererence my earlier request, now bought a Garmin Quest as my back up for the Navigator III that I normally use

Read the previous hints'n tips'n advice, but got me a bit confused to be quite honest.

I have MapSource V9 installed already... can I, quite simply, use those maps on my Quest?

Same unlock code?

Any help, but keep it simple cos I'm a numpty, much appreciated :thumb

If you've a BM Nav 3 that uses City Nav (CN) NT.

Quest mk 1 uses non NT City Nav.

Quest mk 2 uses CN NT.

Leading question is how bigs the memory on your Quest, or, can full UK you post code search on it?

I don't think so.

As John mentioned, they use different map types (NT and non-NT) if you have a version 1 Quest

Also, I think the unlock codes are device specific so in addition to both map sets you would need two unlock codes.

You can obviously still plan routes/plot waypoints etc. using whatever maps you want in Mapsource before transferring to the Quest.

I've not tried putting the NT onto my Quest 1 which is running CN EU v8.

Somehow I don't think I'll get full post code search on the Quest, but the mapping may go on ok. Depends on how brave I'm feeling :o

If you have a spare unlock code for the Nav 3 you might be able to add the Quest as the second device on mygarmin.com, but Garmin might have set it up so that it recognises the Quest 1 is "incompatible" with the NT mapping. In any case, the functions like search may be degraded on the Quest 1 with NT, just like it is when you use metrowizz etc to get metroguide as a routing software on the GPS. Not that I've ever doen anything like that :augie

If you do experiment, can you let us know what happens :clap

I don't understand this :blast

My lad has a Quest 1 for sure, but his maps are Version 6.5

The Quest I've just bought S/H (E-bay) has, quote, 243 MB of memory for map space. The maps loaded (Version 6) show the whole of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales... and a good bit of the north French coast... checking on my lads version 6.5 this is over 200MB of mapping... fits in with the quoted 243MB.

But this Quest doesn't have Post Code search facility, so is it a Quest 1 with 115MB maping avialable?

My lad can't get that many maps on to his Quest

MapSource on my computer recognises my Quest and has sent my waypoints to it OK :)

Version 6.5? I'll have a look at my Quest tonight, but that's not the units

or mapping version

It might be the masource

Sending waypoints is different to maps as you've no doubt have found out. BTW if you calaculate routes in v9 NT and send them to the Quest it'll come up with some warning like "the route does not correspond to the mapping do you want to recalculate".

HTH or is it now even less clearer :blast

BTW the mapping is "locked" which is why you could send the waypoints.

I've got a Quest 1 and it doesn't do postcode mapping. I've never found that to be a problem as the address (street / town) is usually enough. For anything else there is google-maps. I can usually then find what I want and program the mappoint accordingly.

It has around 242Mb storage for maps, so if you've only got 1/2 that then you may have a US imoport as they had less memory.

Cheers

Howzitgoin,

I have a Quest 1, none of the Quest 1's have the postcode feature and only the American ones have 128mb of memory, both the Quest 1 and Quest 2 have 256mb, so if you can only load 128mb of maps you've an American one, if you can load 256mb maps and not do postcodes you've a european Quest 1 and if you can load CN Ver9 NT you have a Quest 2. Anyone can load the maps on a pc but you need the device specific unlock codes to transfer those maps to the GPS, you can use the same pc to send maps to any number of GPS units but each individual GPS must be unlocked on that particular pc

Thanks for that... thanks to all :thumb2

Must be a European Quest 1. No post code search, and as Thauma says... no problem. I only wanted the Quest for back up when out of Europe.

Tried to load the World Map (144MB) ... didn't say insufficient memory... just too many maps

But then I'm not gonna be doing the whole world in one go, so can load the whole of Europe, Asia and Africa no problem... so that's OK :thumb

Then tried the City Select Europe Version 6 and loaded 202MB of maps. so no problems there.... it'll do nicely for what I wanted it for :thumb2

When it arrived it came with the set up disc, but only Disc 2 of 2 for the mapping. Disc 1 was missing

Luckily, on my old computer in the attic den, I have version 6 MapSource (for Laughing Gas's brother's Quest) and this too loads straight up... no problems there then!

After my missis died five years ago I moved my 'computer room' down from the attic to the back bedroom when I bought a new set up.... I must have known the old Dell in the attic would come in handy :clap

Everything seems 'tickertyboo' so thanks all :bounce1
