Marzocchi Shiver 45 Factory Works

Hi Doug

My forks are Marzocchi Shiver 45 Factory Works and they have a 95mm spacing between the caliper mounting holes. The original XC axle clamps have 55mm spacing. I don't know if factory works forks where ever fitted to bikes as an OEM part, apparently these particular forks came off a KTM but they wouldn't have been OEM on a KTM bike. It's also worth noting that not all Marzocchi Shiver 45 Factory Works forks have the correct upper diameters for the XC tipple clamps mine did but Bli55's didn't.

The standard procedure seams to be; find a pair of Marzocchi Shiver 45's with 54MM top clamp diameter and 57MM lower clamp diameter (off something like an Aprilia RXV), then swap the axle clamps from the XC onto them (after machining the clamps).

Hi again Doug

I've just read your posts on ADV and the question makes more sense now! Unfortunately the answer is the same, I've got no idea where you could source the same axle clamps as mine. As mikecbrxx says you are probably best going down the route of custom brake caliper plate and axle spacers.

I do have the original axle clamps fitted to the original fork (not great condition if I remember correctly) I could sell you however I bet it would be too expensive to send to the USA.

I have 45mm Shivers off a Husky on my bike. Erik at Hotrod Welding has a brake caliper plate that fits (ask him, not on site) and I got an adjusted stainless set of axle spacers from Stefan Scheffelmeier in Germany(specify sizes to be sure). Job done.

I've bought stuff from Erik at HotRodWelding before,so I'll email him on this subject. Thanks. Do you know what the caliper hanger bolt hole spacing is for the caliper plate you mention? Is it the 95mm spacing or the 102mm spacing?

Right now, any of the following three approaches would probably work for me, if I can find the appropriate parts (or have them made):
1) Stock set of BMW X-Challenge axle clamps
2) Set of Shiver axle clamps with 95mm spacing for the caliper hanger mounting bolts (use with KTM 950 caliper hanger like you did)
3) Set of Shiver axle clamps with 102mm spaciing for the caliper hanger mounting bolts (I have such a set), plus caliper hanger that works with this spacing and stock BMW X-Ch Brembo caliper (I'll email Erik at HotRodWelding to see if he has such a hanger).

I've also noticed that some Shiver axle clamps have the required 20mm/25mm axle hole diameters, while others have larger holes and will require diameter reducing spacers. The Shiver axle clamps I have would require these axle diameter reducing spacers. Obviously, if I can find a set that has both the 20mm/25mm axle diameter, AND the 95mm caliper hanger mounting hole diameter, that would be easiest.

Nothingtosee, over in ADV, can you PM me your email address (if you don't mind). I'd like to talk to you about your BMW OEM axle clamps, and it would be easier to do via email I think. I don't think my membership in ukgser lets me exchange PMs here. If you prefer not, I can ask you here.

Sorry, saw the post last night but forgot to measure. Erik will have those figures in his head.

Hi Mike,
Exchanged some emails with Erik on this subject. He provided the attached photo of the adapter bracket he made, that goes between the axle clamp, and the stock caliper hanger that attaches to the caliper. Erik's adapter bracket has a pitch of 54mm for the stock caliper hanger and 60mm for the axle clamp mounts.

What brand/model of axle clamps were you using? Your conversion was for an X-Challenge, is that correct?

And for your axle clamps, what are the axle bore hole diameters on the left and right side axle clamps? If other than the stock 20mm/25mm, I assume you had to use some axle diameter reducing sleeves?

Hi Doug

I was fortunate as I am using stock axle on mine with a 2mm increase in spacer and no sleeving. Had to machine out the bottom (?) Triple clamp by 1mm diameter. That was arranged by Erik too. The only other thing was the bracket for the caliper.

I am not sure what Husky the forks are off. Bought them off Walter Colebatch who got em of ebay but never used them.

I have some ohlins the same as these with triple clamps to match but they are too narrow to mount the x challenge wheel. what clamps do you have for these? i can either change clamps or front wheel but can never seem to find a wheel to suit.

Hi Bliss. Yes the offset on mine looks about the same.

As I've said before I'm certainly no expert! However... My suggestion would be to reconsider taking the forks apart to get the outer legs machined. Less than an hours work to strip them and then a machinist can safely and accurately turn them down to the 57mm needed. I'd guess it would't cost too much if they had the loose tubes? I'd also enquire about getting the turned surface painted black at the same time :D

For me the aim of the fork swap was to have the bike correctly set up for my weight and riding which means at some point an expert rebuilding the forks. Unless you are very lucky even your brand new forks will still need taking apart, the springs in mine where replaced with much heavier ones (I forgot to find out what though :blast).
