I'm starting to look for an MX helmet for when I go on the tracks (both here on the IOM and when I ride the Dommie down to the Dolomites in July), and, just like my road helmet, I've found that I've got an Arai head.

The Arai VX Pro helmet fits beautifully, but is oh so expensive - especially when I'll be riding on rocky tracks so if I do come off, it's be trashed

I've tried Fox, Ikon and One helmets on, and all of them are too tight on the forehead, so does anyone know a manufacturer that copes with the long oval head shape like Arai?

I've got an Arai head but not an Arai wallet. I had a HJC full face and just got a HJC flip top...... perfect fit and cheap as chips £100

Me Arai shaped too.

Every other make helmet I have, I've had to take the Stanley knife to the forehead region - been find after that.

I thought that's what it was supposed to be for? :thumb

If Arai helmets suit your head shape, then Bell motcross helmets should fit well.

Did the Arai helmet course many years ago. (spent many years in the trade)
The best way to break a helmet down is to use your thumb on the area that is a touch to tight and gently apply pressure slowly breaking it down to fit this will/should not damage the liner.
Most helmets as long as they arnt completely the wrong shape should be made to fit.
Also when buying a new helmet when you are looking ask if you can try on a new helmet and not a display one, as they do end up changing shape slightly with lots of different shaped heads being put into them :thumb

I know Blue, but need a big audience to get responses from :D

I'll try everyone's ideas next time I'm in the bike shops :thumb

Try an HJC CLX off road lid.

I have always used Arai's (currently a Quantum F) as there is nothing like them for comfort and fit for me anyway, but I could not justify the cost for offroading so I bought the HJC from Hein Gericke for £65,not an Arai but dammed good for the price!

So that would be to pre-compress the stuff that supposed to compress in the event of an accident to absorb the shock and protect your sweed would it not?

HJC CLX -Arai head shape...new Shoei's are too, they have changed their helmet shape, I now have a quantum F and a xr1000 and both fit perfectly.

I bought the HJC for summer as the tour x was too expensive for just summer use.

My helmet supplier says I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to fit. I think thats what he said anyway :D

Big Twin
Feck me your cage has been rattled again. :D
You are not compressing the energy absorbing core of the helmet you are merely compressing the outer area that would normally end up giving any way. :dabone

In my 3 helmets, there is only one layer of material in there - that's the stuff that absorbes the forces by giving way progressively to dissipate the energy from the impact, should your luck be out. It's the giving way in the accident, and not before, that provides the benefit.

Thus by pre-compressing it, you are taking away it's ability to compress in the event of a bang-up. Do it a little of course, and it may make so minor a difference as to be negligible. On the other hand, you wouldn't want to be making half an inch of difference at, say, the front of your helmet, where's there's likely to be no more than an inch, say, of absorber.

Granted cutting a little away with a blade removes dissipating material, but leaves the remainer uncomressed, ready to still to its job. Likewise, you wouldn't want to remove much of course - a little skim fine to remove a sharp edge (like on my lids which did just dig in a sharp line across my forehead).

Tried on the Arai Tour X today. Near perfect fit but would need to change cheek pads to a bigger size .Price quoted £260. Anyone know where I can buy such pads and price. I looked at other makes of a similar style ,but the Arai does it for me. Plain grey-dogs b---ocks.

What are you an untrained monkey doing looking at your helmet liner, it will all go wrong and never be the same again :D

That's the idea - hurt like hell before :bash

On the plus side, someone told me the other day that Shoei have changed the shape of their lids to be more Arai-like - anyone know is this is the case?
