I'm thinking aboot gettin' a kilt. Just thinkin' aboot it mind you...:augie I've lived here for 51 years and my Maw's Scottish (so's my sister) so I feel that I'm entitled to withoot feelin' like Californian celt at a Comin' Home event.

I've hired kilts several times and quite like wearing one. They're now about £75 to hire the full monty and I reckon that several hires would pay for one of your own. My mate's son just bought a full set of kilt clobber for just under £800. Initially, I'd just be looking to buy a kilt and sporran and then maybe later add stuff for formal do's like weddings etc.

What I'd like to know is what's the difference in a 5 yard kilt (the likes of Slater's Menswear do them) and an 8 yard kilt (apart from 3 yards)? Is there much visible difference? I realise the weight in the 8 yard will be heavier (dunno by how much though). I know you can get manmade fibre kilts that look good and are much cheaper but I'd want a "real" one IYKWIM.

If I bought the cheaper 5 yard kilt, would I later wish I'd bought the 8 yard?

My weight can fluctuate between FB and VFB sizes. How much "play" in size does a kilt have before it's too big or too wee for you?

I saw a lovely tartan the other day in Embrie (sort of purple heathery colours) but I forget the name. It wasn't a Clan, it was Spirit of Scotland or something like that and I reckon that's what I would go for as opposed to a Clan or a fitba' team. Dinnae think Man U hae a tartan anyway. My Mum's maiden name Clan tartan is loupin' so I winnae go there...

I won't be throwin' away my Lederhosen: I'm only embrasing my multi cultural background :D

TIA and cue pisstaking I suppose :ronno

Personally i wouldn't get yourself a kilt , they'll call you names behind your back and stick the knife in ...

My Nan bought me one when i was about 16/17 for a doo for her family ( Unfortunatly she was Scottish ) ...

So above Fort Bill i went and lern't how to say Bonnie Lad ...

Worn it quite a few times for family doo's then got it out for The Skye Drinkathon last year .....

I was asked a few questions ....

So whats that Tartan or did you pick it out of a catalogue ...

Did you get it to match your hair ...

Are there any real Scots here .................

The tirade went on for a while until my ears fell asleep , which isn't difficult for the shitstains involved ...

It did seem strange considering two of them were Cadburys Smash Hunters and one used his verbal to fertilise his leeks ....

Oh and then there were the WEBS ...............

My kilt arrived last week and I've got to say that Slaters made a cracking job of it. I got some accessories when I picked it up but couldnae see a sporran (day or semi dress) that I really liked. I've since looked at dozens of sporrans on websites and in shops withoot success. I finally saw one in a shop in St Andrews last week that I really liked. A leather pouch style Day Sporran. It was £120 but "hand stitched and crafted by Manacraft in Edinburgh". The name meant feck all to me but the shop assistant told me they did handcrafted bags and other leather goods. It was broon and they didnae have a black one. I decided to wait and see if Manacraft had a website. They do...I contacted them and got the same sporran direct from them for £40 cheaper :D

One thing that has really pissed me off during my sudden interest in things tartan: FFS, when I go for an Indian or Bangladeshi meal, I don't want it cooked or served by Hamish in his kilt or Fritz in Lederhosen so why the feck would I want to be served in a kilt shop by a turban wearing Siekh or a Polish guy who's knowledge of the English language is on par with his knowledge of highland dress. :blast  There are also (especially online) cheap leather sporrans but they're made in Pakistan or China. Somehow, it doesn't seem right...

Anyhoo, here's ma sporran. Plenty room for a hipflask and a £5 note :thumb2
