The instrument cluster on my 3000 mile GS1200 Adv has began to melt, BMW have explained that sun bouncing off of a window and then being magnifyed through the bikes screen can cause this problem.
Worst bit is its not a warranty issue:confused:
Anyone had any success in getting BMW to help them out?

Thanks

Don't see how the 'bouncing off a window' comes into it.
The total amount of heat bouncing of any window isn't enough to melt anything, however focussed.
It's simply the screen focusing the sun's rays and melting the cluster.
If the screen and cluster are original and 'as fitted' then you have a straight forward warranty claim.
Unless BM want to put a sticker on the bike saying 'Not to be used in sunlight', of course !

I would love it to be a straight forward warranty claim but 2 dealerships and BMW customer services are so far claiming its not a warranty issue.
Perhaps if i lived in South Africa?
Oh and the bike is as genuine as the day it left the showroom.

I don't doubt that the sun, at the right angle, through a standard screen can be focussed enough to generate sufficient heat to melt or distort plastic. The same sun, through a chunk of broken milk bottle, can start a forest fire that destroys hundreds and hundreds of acres. It's rare but it happens. Honda had precisely that problem with out-of the-box FireBlades.

I assume that the bike is still within its two year manufacturer's warranty? If so, it's a BuMW problem. This is better as BUMW can chose to repair or replace anything they like. More often than not they are obliging.

If not (ie, the vehicle is out of the official manufacturer's two year warranty) then things may be a little less clear as:

(a) You will probably looking at some sort of insurance based cover, assuming you have bought extended warranty. This may have BuMW's name on it, but the insurer is independent. The outside influence of heat (which is what sunlight is) may well be excluded by the policy, in the same way that fading of bright work and paint (due to sunlight or the elements) may well be excluded, too.

(b) If you have no extended warranty cover, then BuMW have no obligation to help you at all, unless the problem manifested itself within the warranty period. You are then appealing to nothing more than BuMW's (or a dealer's) goodwill.

Manufacturers warranty doesn't apply.
It's not fit for purpose so you can claim under the sale of goods act within any 'reasonable' timescale (max 6 yrs England, 5 yrs Scotland).
They're fobbing you off.
Gets the wheels in motion with the small claims court.
BuMW will soon cave.

Its well with-in its manufacturers warranty, i'm struggling as to why dealerships and BMW customer services are trying to wash there hands with the issue.

Ah that one came through whilst i was writing my last post, small claims court? Seems a bit excessive, i thought i'd bought into a premium brand with premium service levels and customer satifaction?

Well you were wrong there about premium levels of customer satisfaction.

Every dealing I have had with BMW customer care has led me to being fobbed off, I really think they are in money saving mode i.e. The answers NO, now whats the question?

Threaten them with small claims, as previous they will cave in.

Have you spoken directly to BuMW customer services in Bracknell?

Have you got the reasons as to why they feel your call for a warranty payment is without merit, in writing?

Really? I found them courteous and helpful; whilst obviously they have a job to do looking after customer relations they also work for a commercial enterprise that needs to be profitable. Perhaps you were too quick to rant & threaten? Biggest mistake you can make is to alienate the person who is trying to help you?

I followed up a (sorted / no quibble) warranty job with a polite but firm and reasoned email expressing my dissatisfaction and was amazed to receive a £500 (yes, five hundred) pound credit as a good will getsure. Hardly money saving mode?

Really, so it seems totally reasonable to refuse a melted instrument cluster because you left your bike in the sun does it?

What makes you think I ranted and raved, I had 2 issues, a broken zip on a brand new jacket - they would not allow the dealer to replace it and an issue in france where they refused to help me even though I offered to pay and left me stranded to sort it out myself (my bike was not 3 months old at the time)

My opinion stands.

instrument cluster

You may have to look at a different cause,my 2006 GSA went in for its first service at 600 miles with a damaged cluster,i got it changed under warranty.I then fitted a Touratech instrument cover and noticed last week yet another melted cluster,So sometime during the last 3 years this damage has happened again regardless of a cover protecting the cluster from the sun:nenau

I didn't say they were reasonable to refuse the claim, just reporting a personal positive experience to give some balance. If you did nothing to P*ss them off I am genuinely shocked you received such poor treatment. The jacket issue should have been sorted by the dealer as the responsible retailer and nothing to do with customer services. Did you actually speak to them yourself or was it just an excuse from the dealer? Also did they offer to repair the jacket (which is their right under consumer law) and you just held out for a replacement?

As for being stranded in France I am intrigued, I've had two very good responses from BMW assist (admittedly in the UK) so again I'm shocked they didn't help you out.

Nessie, With regards to the melted clocks I would approach BMW C.S. (politely but firmly) and point out that there seems to be a design fault that causes the problem and therefore you consider it should be put right under warranty. I would also ask them if in their opinion the focussing of the sun by the screen presents a fire risk? (If the response if no it just melts the plastic them they are effectively admitting the fault). If they put the blame back on you ask them where it warns in the handbook of potential solar damage? If you still don't get anywhere put it all down in writing to them expressing your dismay / stressing staunch brand loyalty being shaken etc. etc. Make it clear you have researched the issue and know you are not an isolated case and if you can find genuine reports of others getting satisfaction under warranty point them out. Be polite but firm, persistant to the point of nuisance if necessary and I bet you get sorted in the end....

Morning all, thanks to everyone for your advice/support i will of course pursue the matter and keep you updated with my success/failure!!

Thanks again

my twopence of info: This is yet another niggly little design fault of our lovely bikes. In countries that are properly sunny like Greece, this is a well known problem, to the extent that BMW greece actually warns you with a sticker on the screen... but won't replace the melted instrument panel...

Nessie - Have you spoken with BMW customer services in Bracknell? If you havent suggest you do this and bypass the dealer and remove a link in the chain (or should that be drive shaft?)

Wouldn't that be a U/J in a driveshaft:nenau
