Ime thinking of getting a PDA/GPS or similar which will accomodate memory map ( ime told this is like having a ordnance survry map in front of you?) to enable me to map out routes for green laning, anybody got any experiences on which systems are the easiest to use / download / mark waypoints etc (as i am a bit of a techno phobe).
All advice appreciated.

Have a look at viewranger.com - OS maps on a Symbian phone (Nokia, Samsung). You can buy as little or as much of 1:50000 and 1:25000 mapping as you want. Easy enough to plot routes on the phone too.

I have both Memory map and Tracklogs. I tend to use the Tracklogs more as it just seems a bit more intuitive, although it may be because I had it first so am more used to it.
You can now but Memory map as a download so you can just get the parts of the country you want.
Either are great for plotting an accurate route on. I use it most for MTB'ing or for the wife's horse events and long distance rides.

What type of unit PDA/MOBILE PHONE do you chaps use, which is the easiest?:thumb

I've got Memory Map on an ancient Fujitsu Siemens Loox 720 PDA. The key thing for me was the size and clarity of the screen(full VGA 640*480 & 6cm * 7.5cm). I use it with a bluetooth GPS receiver and power both off the bike when I use it there. As the PDA ain't waterproof I found a waterproof home for it in an Otterbox which sits on a RAM mount on the bars.

I also have Copilot loaded on the same PDA so I can use it as a traditional satnav but I wouldn't recommend the CoPilot software.

Final - I also go hill walking and have found Memory Map an excellent aid when the clouds come in on the hill tops. You can navigate within a couple of metres constantly seeing where you are in relation to any hazards, eg cliffs

I have been using Memory Map on a PDA for years and it is very very good, especially when off-road. There are some things to be aware of, some of which you probably already know.

For routing you are better off drawing the route on the PC software and then exporting it to the PDA. Trying to do it on the PDA can be a right faff. Marking waypoints is not easy because it is difficult to be precise on the screen with a gloved finger!

This software does not plan routes like TomTom or Garmin. You can get a PDA with maps from Memory Map but I would advise buying the PC software. You can transfer the latest Mobile navigator, as it is included, and you can then tailor the maps to suit. You can also choose which OS maps you buy.

The size of map on the PDA is limited because Windows Mobile 6 has filesize limits that cannot be altered (Windows Mobile 5 is better but there are still limits). I create smaller maps areas on the PC and export them to the PDA. Currently you can see all the Route Planner scale maps for the UK and Europe and each individual explorer map will dispaly easily. If using a GPS it will automatically move the map and change the map as you progress.

You will need some sort of waterproof box to house the PDA, I currently use an Otterbox 1900. I drilled some holes in the back of it and fitted a Ram mount with rubber washers to keep it watertight. It's never leaked. Touratec do a PDA case and mount which does the same thing but I have not used one.

With the Otterbox you can feed cables in through the base and power the PDA. I used to both power it and hardwired the mic/sound to my Autocom. I now just power it and use bluetooth for the phone/stereo music, satnav voice. I also have Tom Tom Navigator 7 which is good for route planning throughout Europe.

It can be difficult to read in sunlight but you get used to it. It is awkward to access the menus unless you are stopped and use a stylus.

Having said all that i like it and regularly use it to 'look at map' rather than trying to browse a satnav map.

If there is anything you want to know about this software PM me. I currently use an HTC Touch Pro PDA phone with built-in GPS but I still have my HTC P3600 Trinity that worked very well and would be available for sale if you are interested.(you would need a separate GPS unit)

I have a Garmin GPSMAP60CSX running Garmin TOPO maps and an HP Travel Assistant PDA running Memory Map.

I find that memory Map on the PC is great for planning but when on the side of a hill (I use it for mountain walking) there is too much detail I don't need on a small screen which obscures what I do need.

The Garmin will not run Memory Map but it will accept Memory Map waypoints and routes which are then shown on the Garmin TOPO maps. These maps get a bit of stick as they only show roads, tracks, paths, contours and not much else - but that's pretty well all you need. Unlike Memory map though the Garmin has one big plus. When on roads it can calculatr proper road routs as Zumo.

I can therefore use it to navigate on road with full turn left, turn right instructions and then when I go off road it gived me compass directions like memory map for straight line waypoint to waypoint navigation.

Incidentally, as the garmin has a magnetic compass built in plus a barometric altimeter, unlike most GPS kit, it will show required direction of travel without the user having to be moving. When I want an overview there is nothing to beat unfolding a proper OS or Harveys map.

Is this combo any good?

Memory Map 1:50 and a Garmin GPS 60

I want to use it for offroad trail riding etc

Memory map for plotting your route on the PC and Garmin for on the trail is a good combination the only thing to be aware of is the TOPO map tiles can be big so you'll need the 60 that can take the MicroSD cards.

personally I plot the route on Memory map then print off that section of the map, I then send the route to the garmin unit I also have the TOPO maps on the Garmin (60csx) as well, I'll set the main screen up to show the OS grid ref, so when out on trail I navigate using printed off map and garmin showing the OS ref, it works very well.

and it's helped out big time when weather has closed in on top of a mountain you can use the trackback function to get you safe.

this apply's to walking but I would imagine doing similar but using the routing function of the 60 will give you the same effect

Memorymap is ace. I use it with 1:25000 maps on an HTC Touch Diamond with TomTom. It's everything in one. :thumb2

I have Memory Map and Garmin Mobile on my Samsung Omnia Windows mobile 6 phone.
You guys seem to be well into this stuff.
i need a set up for mountain bike cross country riding, can you suggest one. and where do you buy them from . I would prefer not to use a phone
cheers
