Memory Map

Hi...

I'm new here, as I'm picking up my 650 Dakar on Saturday.

I ride an XR250 off road, currently, but not so much for laning...so far I have been laning/overlanding in my LR Defender 90 (with XR on the trailer), which I navigate with maps and Memory Map on my Laptop.

Obviously, Lappy is a little large for the bikes, but I do like MM...does anyone have any suggestion for the best platform to run MM on a bike? Doesn't run on a palm (which I have), only on windows based OS.

Any info would be great.

Furthermore...does anyone know of a better system than MM, for the bikes?

Only just read your post so you may well be sorted by now. I too like MM and currently run it on a T-Mobile MDA Touch and before that on a Compact II. While these aren't exactly ideal for bikes, they do work very well and I can run both MM and TomTom from the same unit (it will run both at once but the map refresh gets a bit sluggish so I don't) with real-time moving maps and route planning. They are also fully featured mobile phones and PDAs. They use a stand-alone bluetooth GPS unit which you can get for about £10 upwards now. I either simply keep it in my jacket pocket and refer to it when needed, or slip it into the clear map pocket on my tankbag. The one on the right is the compact II and I am thinking about putting it on Fleabay, but PM me if you're interested.

This system looks pretty good but it is still in it's infancy, and I think there have been a few minor teething problems.

There is also a roadangel unit that does both roads and mem map.

Have a look at the Mio P360 or P560 both running windows OS and have inbuilt GPS.
