Alternative screens vs Touratech Windscreen extender

Bought a TT Windscreen extender a couple of months ago from NN and it works great but I'm on the short side 5' 10" with the low seat option. Taller riders could try Tobinators which I don't need.

No ear plugs necessary with a Shoei X Spirit.

Bit worried however it could be easily nicked.

Alternative ?

You could always try this, it seems to work quite well but it is a little intrusive. The site claim an effective increase in screen size of 5", and while I can't verify that, it certainly has made a difference and the bike is a lot quieter. The main bonus against a much larger screen is that I can still see clearly over it (I'm 6'2"), it works by deflecting the airflow due to it's shape, although I haven't figured out what it does to the fuel consumption.

I used 4.5 feet to do my screen and it cost a shade under £52, posted from the US.

Wunderlich Ergo Screen

Well......I am 5 ft. 11 in. tall, use an OEM low seat. I have it adjusted so it is is at the lowest angle possible so that it just nicely clears my MRC shorter GPS mount with the Garmin 2610 fitted. The result is that I see well over the screen and yet the air flow just barely touches the top of my helmet. No head buffeting and no bug splatted visor. 800-1000 km days are possible with this set-up. In the hottest of summer weather eg. 32 degrees Celsius and up you might want more air flow. It is pricey at about $299 USD (BMW Santa Cruz) but am pleased with how it works. Even survived a drop-down style toll road gate coming down on it with no adverse effects (don't ask me how I know this). :D :thumb

Anyone got a report on the MRA Vario (not 'touring') screen. Brilliant on the 1150, are they as good on the 12?

Thanks

Mike

MRA - A solution for the very tall

At 6'4" the std screen was causing major problems (buffeting & noise) on all motorway & fast road riding for both me and my pillion. :( I had tried all variations even no screen at all but without a cure. I was so desperate I resorted to taping an old cruiser screen to the std. It increased the height (500mm form front fixing points) and width (+40mm/side). The difference was unbelievable. :bounce1

I bought the MRA VARIO screen as it was the closest to my lash up. After a bit of simple modification and adjustment I have a got a set up that is 95% perfect. My settings are, std seat in the lowest setting, Tobinators 2nd notch up, the side height adjusters on the highest setting and the screen modified to give an extra ½ inch at full extension (now approx 485mm). The results are fantastic and it still look’s good. It is now possible to cruise comfortably at speeds well over 70mph. I have even found it more comfortable if I don’t use ear plugs.

The only problems I have found are the bent up legs and after a long run (1 to 2 hrs) I become aware that the buffeting has not been dialled out 100% as I still feel as though I have just got off a fair ground ride.(or is that my riding style?)

The next step is to find perfection. I am now looking at ways to extend the screen even further so I can raise the seat to the high setting and illiminate the micro buffeting.

Overall I feel, this is £106 very well spent it has transformed my 1200GS into a mile muncher for the over 6’. :bounce1 :bounce1

Have you thought about the Cee Baileys Screen which is available in different heights & widths? Available here

C&W for MRA

Just bought and fitted an MRA Vario. £85 from CW in Dorchester.

Tip on fitting for numpties like me :o is to make a note of how the bushes on the OE screen are fitted/positioned ie where's the thick edge and where's the thin. Oh and don't loose yer capping nuts somewhere in the bike that you can't get at :spitfire

Not tried yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Skippy.

Nippy Normans (Secdem ?)

I am 6 foot tall and I have just fitted one of Nippy Normans taller screens to my GS12. I went for a quick spin to check it out and the difference compared to the standard screen it is great. I am no longer deafened by wind noise at 75MPH plus. :)

can confirm that the nn screen is secdem. I have had one for two weeks (tobinated) and can confirm that wind roar is substantially reduced.
I'm 6' 1" and have the screen and the seat in high setting and Fastway pegs in the low setting - good ergos for offroad and comfortable for highway cruising.

RICH's Screen

I am looking for a small tinted screen and notice that RICH seems to have a nice one on his bike - I can't email him directly as I appear to have limited rights on the site but would be keen to find out where I can get a 'summer' screen like that..

Why do people think that the Nippy Norman screen is a Secdem screen? Mine is a NN screen it doesn't say Secdem anywhere. Although it is very very similar to the Secdem screen that has Secdem written on it (available from Moto  bins).

because it is...a friend & I asked Norman to get them from Secdem...and he obliged...the branding has been removed...

yep the new screen does look good, it also has an extra support bar ...as well as the two small screens on each side...

Fitted a SECDEM to my 1200GS a couple of weeks ago.....

Big improvement. I'm 6'2" and even on the lowest setting I get minimal buffetting.

Also looks much better on the bike than the OE. Purchased it direct from SECDEM - the UK agents had never heard that they were producing a screen for the 1200GS.

It finally cured the drumming problem as well. Only problem was the length of the standard screws - had to file down the plastic washers to get the thread to bite. Anybody wants to see pics let me know and I'll e-mail them across.

could you please send me the pictures

I bought tinted screen from NN, great service arrived promptly however I found it to tall in winter rain. Couldnt see through it due to head light glare in fact downright dodgy on unlit roads. I have played around with height but have now re-fitted the standards screen.

Possibly I am a mutant (long body no legs) or its the tint causing me grief. Great on clear days but not that easy to keep swopping em!!!! :P

How tall are you ?
I am 6' and even with it set about mid way, I still look over the screen rather than through it.

Was once 5'10" but suspect with old age shrinking!!! :(
Ive tried it at most settings, at midway I find myself sitting up and down to see through/ over it!!
I suspect this is like the old "whats the most comfortable seat" debate that rages on about the 1150gs, one mans meat is another mans poison.
May be tempted to flog it and spend cash on extra lights.
