Michelin T66's

The rear arrived Friday, and has now been fitted. They honoured the price of £150, and that included new valves and balancing. So I am quite pleased with myself:)

Aiming for 150

Bob,

I guess I shall hassle them for the 150 quid then.

Do you mind If I quote you ?

Sure, I don't have a problem with that. The guy at Pro Tyre in Enfield I dealt with was Len, and he was good as gold. Its worth a try :)

Oh I think take 'em in loose is such a good idea

Oh hell.

Yesterday I went in with the bike for the Tourances.

Front went OK. Other than the mechanic thought he had finished then I asked "what about these 2 bolts ?" pointing at the caliper bolts that had been put in finger tight only a turn or two.

Next up I got a "slight burr on the thread" of a rear wheel nut. This was due to difficulty finding the start of the thread and using a bit of force. Only thing was it had about 3 mm that looked incredible clean as in thread crossed and stripped clean. At this point I ain't too happy. But kept quite and let the guy do his job.

Much faffing about and looking to clean the thread. And then the worst thing I have ever had to watch to my bike started to happen. Guess what an attempt to clean the thread by torquing under heavy load me poor little wheel nut. Miracle the hub is ok. The mechanic went very quite and left looking for a vice and die to cut the entire thread. Better that way than in my hub I thought.

He showed me the newly cut in a die nut. Oh dear looked a bit rough on the top of the thread it had that ragged look. So he also said he would "understand if I wanted to replace it". To right I am gonna. Anyhow the mechanic went with me to explain that at least the price of a new nut should be taken off. Me I was just worried about my hub.

I was then presented with the bill for tyres and fitting on the bike. And assured that I would not be charged for cleaning the thread. Red mist started to appear. Calmly, which really is not like me, I explained I could not understand why I would be charged for damage created by their fitter. In fact you surely owe me at least the price of a new nut. After a little chat with the mechanic I was offered either to claim back the refund on the price of a new nut to be discounted the fitting costs. Guess what I took back the fitting costs.

Got back home took out the bolts (he marked it) and it is wasted. The doggy new cut threads either were not the right pitch or could not handle the torque. Have checked all the remaining nuts in all hub positions and thank the lord the hub is fine. Just need to get a new nut that can actually take load.

Needless to say I have had these off before and they were all OK only needing a couple of fingers to drive home before a last turn or 2 with a torque wrench.

Next time I'll take them in loose - less to go wrong.

See here and look for "I don't trust 'em" for why I feel so silly for even letting them near it

Malky:
Most of the big franchises, e.g., National Tyres, that sell bike tyres will only fit to loose wheels as a matter of policy. Too much can go wrong with fitting bike wheels and the consequences too serious for insurers to want to worry about.
I worked as a 15-yr-old on a Saturday job at a small local tyre-fitters. In other words, requirements and qualifications for the job: zero.
Sorry about your ordeal, Malky. Seems that there's not been too much damage done. Could've been a lot worse. Moral of the story: if somebody's incompetent enough to bugger up a job, why would you trust them to be competent enough to put it right?

Did you get the new treads for £150?

Were they 'H' or 'V' rated?

Will you be a return shopper?

Did they do an OK job mounting and balancing the tyres?

I think that I'll get my tyres elsewhere!

PS Are you coming to the Sahara?

Malky's Woes - there's always an upside

Hi Malky,

Sorry to hear of your plight with the tyre shop *******s!! I used to use a chain religously but recently got worried with the increasing use of what seemed like child labour - I found a small independent place near me and the guy is a gem. He really does take care over it - he works on it as if it was his own bike - nice to see. Being small - means dropping in on a whim is not advisable as he will take quite some time to get it right. I wne t down with a puncture and he was changing tyres on some Okikokilebbenundred or other and althought the shop was still open for another hour he didn't think he'd have time to do it - I was somewhat shocked at this as the chain would be sending me on my way in 10-15 mins, but I pleaded with him and he stayed open to help me out, sure enough I didin;t get out of their until 6.30 - 20 more minutes spent on th rocket ship and the rest doing mine.

I will definately be going back - so long as I plan things in advance (to book a slot and make sure he has what I want in stock) I will be fine. Down side is the extra time lost, the need to plan these things and additional cost but I figure these are worth it for the service received.

Malky, I am somewhat surprised after the saving on fuel we helped you achieve on the ride down to Princetown I would've thought you could've lavished a bit more care on your pride and joy and perhaps pay a few quid more - but I guess once a Jock, always a Jock ;) :D :D :D

Still a bit p1ssed that you and the fabulous Baker boy & girl cleared off and left me on my lonesome at Princetown - especially after I had made arrangemenets with Mrs B on the Saturday - and then to hear you stuffed your face in the bakery!!! B@stards!!! Maybe, just maybe I rang the tyre shop and got them to put the Work Experience kid on your tyre change.

Moral of this: Never cross the Jud9e :mcgun

Did you get the new treads for £150?
Nah the stupid tw@t thought that after quoting me 150 for tyres and 170 for tyres and fitting that taking off fitting came to 158 quid. Thing is I did not think for a min that he was trying to do me just that he was a bit thick. Me I was just dead keen to leave to avoid feeling so sick, and ever keener to be shot of the tw@ts and go and check out the threads on the hub. Thanks goodness they are OK.
Will you be a return shopper?
Now that is a bit like asking will I go to Princetown next year and wait 1 hour again for breakfast just to have it cold. Not likely, more likely to go round the corner and order from there.
Nah. Well I may go with loose wheels. Still kicking myself I did not. Really I did not fancy taking them off when there in some crappy oily forecourt and dead keen to have Tourances and beat the M25 traffic. In the car there was no way I could even have made it before closing time.
Did they do an OK job mounting and balancing the tyres?
Oh Yeah.
Were they 'H' or 'V' rated?
V all 149mph of it so that should do.
I think that I'll get my tyres elsewhere!
Good luck there all the same as Simon E points out. Hence my don't trust 'em post on the aforementioned thread.

Few more quid no problem I was just after the tyres in stock for a fair price. Besides I drove many mile on the b@stard M4 and M25 to get 'em so saving money was hardly top priority.

Err. I thought you were of to a business meeting and not heading our way. Did you not spot Mr & Mrs Bakerman about 10:15 on Sunday ? Never mind I know where the bakery is. :) I have felt the heat from the oven and tasted the produce. :)
City Slicker is planning a trip down there sometime. Will let you know. It should not be missed.

I was, in Malmesbury but getting there too early would mean Billy-no-mates would have no-one to play with so heading up with you guys I would've killed some more time - n'er mind I called on the chap who I bought my bike off in Dorchester instead - strange thing though my fuel consumtion suffered badly - must've been all those hills going North to Wiltshire!!! :D

Sorry to hear of your plight Malky. I got into the habit of taking my wheels in loose a long time ago, because I can trust myself to remove the wheels correctly. Its still not a guarantee as I found out 2 years ago when I got the tyres on my Triumph changed by Carnells in Enfield. They managed to chip the paintwork on the rear rimbig time. To be fair, they accepted responsibility straight away with no quibbles. They arranged for the wheel to be sorted out properly, and they lent me a bike while the work was being done so that I wasn't off the road.

Cowboys abound

Very interesting reading about the tyre fitter in Enfield. I have used them twice. After having to explain about getting the bead settled evenly so the tyre didn't wobble I have decided to go elsewhere....

Still, a tyre place on the North Way (geddit?) tried to take the tyre off BEFORE deflating it. He had it in a vice before I realised what he was doing.....turned out the fitter had had a large liquid lunch.....

And a Universal (geddit?) tyre place had a fitter playing games on a mobile phone until I lost my rag. The manager (since fired!) assured me everything was OK. He changed his tune once the correct size tyre had been fitted the correct way round.

Now all these stories are about major professional suppliers of a safety-critical component. What the f**k is wrong with the industry or is it us customers not blowing our top often enough?

Can you imagine this happening in Germany?

Oh yes. My front T66 lasted 6k before the blocks went triangular, the rears last 7k. But if you are going touring PUT NEW TYRES ON about two weeks before you leave. That way you know you won't be chasing obscure sizes in outer Pico de Europa - where the "roads" will reduce a tyre to nothing in no time (e.g. 3.5k out of a Mich on a V50 Guzzi).
