Four thousand miles ago I decided to try a set of PR3 Trails on my GSA to replace the Roadsmarts. After a progressive ride around Wales the past weekend with friends on sportsbikes, I have now worn through the wear indicators and a distinct bald patch now exists in the centre section. I really like these tyres in the wet - they are so confidence inspiring you really don't need to adjust your riding style that much if at all. I'm also not concerned about a 4K mile life on the rear as thats self inflicted and made much worse following a Hilltop remap :D

However, I don't like the fairly flat profile that comes with the Trail version - I'm sure it might suit some but I prefer a more rounded profile to give a linear feel when cornering. I did find with the Trail version that its like riding all the time with a squared off rear tyre and so have just ordered a standard PR3 for the rear to see how that one fares. I eventually worked out how to tell the difference between the Trail and Standard version, the former is simply an "R", the latter a "VR". Well, thats what I think - will find out when its delivered tomorrow.

R and VR are speed ratings, PR3 trails are easy to identify cos it says TRAIL on the sidewall.
The difference between the road and trail tyre is that the trail tyre has a wider central section of harder rubber than the road version.

This is mine after 5000 miles. Fine in the centre but sides are goosed.
First time ever the sides have worn out before the middle. Great tyres getting another set.:beerjug:

The PR3 road tyre has a larger area of softer rubber on the edges.

This is Road compound,

Is your tyre a PR3 Trail or just a normal PR3?

Good to see your not wasting the edges.:thumb

I'm going to try the standard rear PR3 so I can tell the difference between the two - if you don't try you never know. Ordered today so should be with me tomorrow to fit.

IME, the RS rear is a better tyre; doesn't square off like a the PR3 rear. The Dunlop also doesn't puncture as easily as the PR3, the RS can 'carry' more pieces of junk without issue.

I'm running a PR3 Trail front with an RS rear at the moment, which was more down to what was available, but is a combo I've wondered about for quite a while.

I've tried both the PR3 Road and Trails (front and rear), I couldn't tell the difference really.

Hmm not sure about that. I've been running RS for a couple of years and have just picked up another puncture in the Pyrennes on a nearly new rear from a sharp stone on a gravel covered Col. Must have had 4/5 punctures in that time. Got it changed with a Bridgestone BT23 which seems good so may stick with that for now.

PR3 tyre life

Had them on 12mnths now and covered 6200 miles with the outsides wearing far quicker than the middle, just covered 1720 miles around Scotland and still plenty of life left yet and will maybe try 2 rears to one front as it wears a lot better than the rear ,brilliant tyres even after hilltop remap ,just put the power down progressivly :D:D:D :thumb
No chicken strips on the rear tread used all the way across it won't go any lower especially with panniers on !!

My Son is using standard PR3 on his Versys and I am running Tourance next on the GS. On Saturday we did quite a few miles of byways and unsurfaced roads, and he often seemed to have more grip than me, so I assume the trails will be better again and was planning to try them next.

The "next" have enough tread to last a long time, but after 2000 miles they are starting to look a little square despite hardly ever seeing a straight road.

My first 400 miles on the standard PR3 rear was great in both wet and dry. For me, the turn in is more linear and predictable without any "drop in" to the corner compared to the Trail. Unfortunately I had someones lost ignition key get picked up by the tyre whilst travelling at a progressive speed last night and that tyre is now toast. New one on the way.

A friend of mine riding behind me in heavy rain commented how the water is being thrown out to the side of the tyre rather than the normal plume sent vertically out from underneath the tyre. Best tyre for cornering in the wet so far for me.

Has anyone run TR91's then swapped to PR3's? I rate TR91's very highly for road use but are the PR3's even better in dry/wet?
