Mine just broke down...

Thats a scary pic of the chain. What bits do need to remove tp be able to check your chain for wear like that? Just rocker cover or more?

My thoughts too, the camchain sideplates have worn through, by abrasion................so much so that the rivets have crumbled and let go

Tis a bit scary:eek:

One puts the oil in the R.H.S doesn't one? It is so simple for someone to drop something in there????? - time for a lockable oil filler me thinks.

The cam chain is clearly accessible once the oil filler cap is removed - ones imagination could run riot.

Of course, you're right:thumby:

Silly me:blast

Why would anyone drop something inside the engine if someone wanted to damage a bike would it not be easier to slash the tyres or kick it over and why refit the cap it would be more fun watching the poor owner getting oil all over his leg wrecking his twat suit as well as his bike.

10/10 for imagination :beerjug:

Do we know if theses reported chain failures all have the same fault, i.e. worn away rivet heads ? And if so what the hell is the chain rubbing on. Gulp!

Ask Engineer he has the answers in Post123 ................easy as 1-2-3:D

Judging by the marks on the chain pictured it is something hard and steel, maybe the gear set for the starter motor or the adjacent gear to the chain sprocket on the shaft which provides the drive to the right hand cams.

What a bunch of girly worriers! there are numerous things that can go wrong in a motorcycle engine to cause it to lock up - if you are really worried about this stuff then you really shouldn't be riding one. Comparisons with the Yamaha S10 are just plain silly, the GS WC has sold in huge numbers whereas Yamaha have sold about three S10s so if they do have problems it is going to take years for them to come to the fore, by which time everyone will have moved on to newer and better bikes.

I thought it wouldn't be long before BMW's PR department chimed in!

Dont come on here cryin if it happens to you or your engine starts makin funny noises.alright.

If it starts making 'funny noises' I will take it to the dealer and ask then nicely to make the 'funny noises' go away.

One of the other owners that this happened to did exactly that.
BMW said "nah, they all sound like that".
And his broke at 140kph..
Don't know what was bigger - the skid on the Tarmac or his underwear!

Just wondering, can you see the sides of the timing chain through the oil filler?

this bolt was loose on alot of our local LCs.

It holds something adjacent to the timing chain (perhaps a guide of some sort).

the starter motor needs to be removed to access that bolt.

Not sure, will take a look later - don't put you finger in to check the smoothness of the side plates when the engine is running though. :D

Indeed, there are many other failures that can cause a locked back wheel, and they are indeed rare. But funnily enough, I don't find any comfort in that right now.

Hey, your bike nearly killed you, but it's ok, cos it doesn't do that very often at all!
Yeah - makes me feel just great!

To anyone that wonders what the fuss is about - ignorance must be bliss...

As I said, it not a logical thing - it's not about percentages and probabilities, it's about how I feel about it.

I've been riding long enough to know the dangers - yet I still do it ( and will continue).

Yeah, call it being "soft" or "girlie" if you want - but it's severely dented my confidence in the machine at the moment. It will take time to restore it.

It get where you're coming from and I expect many on this forum also do....

It looks easy enough to check. Just whip the right hand rockerbox off and have a look at the cam chain plates. Would'nt have thought it a big job for your dealer, or yourself to do if you feel confident enough.

My 2013 LC had it loose too. It was spilling little bit of oil through this screw. Apparently this was caused because technician forgot to put Loctite when tightening it.
