Mine just broke down...

As these get older & some with lots more miles, they may become a potential death trap , IF it really was the chain jamming the gearbox.

I was riding GS WC last week after reading this, was thinking to myself... Timing chain- wheel jambs..

When I was a kid, I had a RD350lc, 2 stroke, 60 mph & the engine main bearings locked up, slight curve on the road at the time, one hell of a rear wheel skid mark, & that was WITH me pulling in the clutch..
It appears as this locks the rear shaft completely there won't be any quick way to regain control..

I HOPE BMW look at a potential chain catcher in event of failure.. It would certainly make me feel happier..

I bet behind the scenes BMW are taking this far more seriously. After all only two shocks failed and they recalled all new RTs so my guess is they will be having a very close look at the timing chains and their arrangement to see whether this is going to happen again.

There are may parts that can fail on a motorcycle that will cause the rider to lose control. The question for the manufacturer is how likely they are to fail. BMW will be checking that this is a one off.

I think you're spot on...

This has happened and thanks to the internet it's now public knowledge, if it should happen again and some poor soul should come a cropper as a result BMW would be in deep and very expensive poo poo...

It would also be one of those problems that if it does require rectification could make the RT issue seem rather insignificant in comparison.

Personally think BMW should just give you a new bike as a gesture of good will. After all if the bike is a solid product ,and there is no chance of it happening again , this would provide a good reassuring sign of the believe in the product. Damage limitation kind of thing.

Just imagine if this failure had killed the owner....what would we all be thinking? Would you ride yours again?. Would you hand the keys back to the dealer. Would the missus stop you riding it.? Would you be happy riding it? It was certainly in the back of my mind yesterday when i was out riding....

This situation reminds me of the fork failures on F650gs bikes that didn't really go anywhere iirc. Another example of a spontaneous potentially lethal failure that rarely happens.

Ok. This cam chain failure maybe a one off and for the owner no real harm done. Think he was lucky. What if this happens again to another lc owner? Are we going to be happy especially if someone killed.
I for sure am awaiting the outcome/conclusion..was it poor quality component? Poor design? Possible recall..again?

Not good this, my 13 GS LC is at 10500 miles and running perfectly. I was thinking of changing to a GSA but not so sure now. A bike breaking is one thing but the rear wheel lock up is a major safety concern and the rider would be lucky to walk away.
I am thinking who needs to take this risk? its only a motorcycle at the end of the day and there are other bikes to buy that never break, Yamaha for one.
With the owners on ADVRider that makes 5 bikes with broken cam chains. If 5 have broken then more are to follow its an inevitable statistic.

Just read the ADV thread and must say it paints a bleak picture. Although the failure numbers are low for the amount of bikes sold, there seems to be a pattern emerging for right hand cylinder cam chain going tits up. I hope there is a satisfactory conclusion to this problem. But regaining the confidence in the product again of those effected may be an uphill struggle.

Just noticed this one on ADVRider.

Quoted from that actual AdvRider thread:eek::eek:

I was totally in love with my ´14 LC, until two months ago, when with only 7000 kms, the right cylinder timing chain broke, just like Andrés´s LC.

The only difference is that almost killed myself when the engine jammed at 140 km/h

The dealer service (Autogermana) has been the worst. After 2 months they offered an engine swap, something totally unacceptable, considering the resale price of a bike in that condition. Best thing about the story: there are 4 bikes, one ´13 and the rest ´14, included mine, affected by the same issue. All of them in the right cylinder and with low kms, fully serviced by the authorised dealer.

I´m pretty sure something is very wrong with this new model. Wish we here had the same customer service standards like in other countries and hope this nightmare ends up soon.

Anybody knows customer service contact in Germany?

Shit, just read the adv rider forum too and dont like what i read. Oh dear. How will these engines be with bigger mileage. Im really hoping this aint gonna be the norm. Fxxxxxg shit. Spent 15k and now got to worry bout mega engine failure or goin down the road on me arse. If i keep the bike im defo extending me warranty..

Anybody know at what point VOSA or any of the other countries vehicle authorities step in and tell a manufacturer to sort it out?

Time to all reject our bikes, stop riding, and cancel any new bike orders.

How many RT,s had suspension failue before BMW pulled them? Less than 5 thats for sure.

That's because BM won't be paying for it.

Engineer will be along soon with an explanation as to why you don't need to worry about dodgy cam chains.

How many sold vs how many with issues? Any stats anyone?
Look, I get that it's a worry, but jesus what an over reaction.

I fear we may very shortly require an explanation of "Absolute Risk"versus "Relative Risk"!

This is good news. 5 failures and no one hurt. It's not going to stop me from enjoying mine.

Well, whatever problem it has, it certainly won't cure itself .

Just thinking aloud.....Wonder if the bike Kevin Ash was riding locked up ?
