Help! I bought one of those mini foot pumps from Hein Gericke in May '03. Didn't get round to using it until I got a puncture in France June '04 and to found it to be useless, letting more out than it put in  I ended up using 8 of those CO2 canisters.

Anyway, I've just tried to figure out why it doesn't work and it would appear that the bit [technical name please] that clamps to the tyre valve doesn't actually grip at all and this is where the air is escaping. Spoke to HG who tell me I'm out of my 2 year warranty period... typical

As that bit is threaded and just screws onto a male (or possibly female? I'll check) fitting on the pipe does anyone know if/where I can pick up that part as a spare?

TIA

Adam

Moral of the story - test any tools that you buy before you need them for real.

Solved the problem with a trip to Halfords.

For £2.50 you get a piece that inserts into the pipe end and is held in place with a jubilee clip.

It works well - had it up to 4 bar on my sons bicycle.

Compared to a typical double canister foot pump it would take a lot longer due to the small amount of air each stroke puts in but definitely worthwhile if you need to add some air and aren't near a garage with an air line.

I've not seen the newer ones but would recommend trying it first and possibly buying the valve from Halfords to replace the cheap and nasty one supplied.

Rather than spend £20 at HG you can get the same thing here for £16.99 delivered.

HTH

Adam :)
