Misleading MCN article

Those sour grapes must taste terrible when your icon doesn't always come first........:toungincheek

If anyone buys a bike based on what MCN reckon is the best, then more fool them.

I read all the test reports of the new Africa Twin in Jan and Feb from those lucky people who had a week all expenses paid in sunny South Africa and on that basis I bought one.
Very disappointed in lots of ways, had to shift it in sept lost lots of cash and bought a new GS for price of a house but don't regret it for a second, best bike I ever had.

To be fair and as plenty know, I had committed pretty much 99.9% on buying the AT several months before it was launched. The demo ride was a big relief back in February as it lived up to my expectations and more. But then, I remember too well how many bikes I've bought in the past when demo rides weren't available at all and you either had to rely on the magazines road test impressions or just take pot luck that your new steed was going to please. I've been reasonably lucky that most haven't let me down with only one beng moved on after four months.

I quite like MCN but only buy it when something catches my eye.
All magazines are biased is some way. Just take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy the read.

I think the standard of all the magazines has gone down over the years. I only buy BIKE religiously these days and another two only when they have something that peaks my interest. MCN is good for lighting the fire or used as masking things when I'm painting and again, bought infrequently.

The trouble is that any idea of independence and differentiation has all but been lost as most of the publications are owned by two media groups....same shit different cover. When Motorcycle Sports and Leasure was bought out I stopped buying that as well as it has becomes dumbed down.

Road tests have always been boring in bike mags haven't they :nenau and they've pretty much always been less than impartial (remember when Bike slagged off a Honda in a road test and Honda withdrew advertising for a while).

I much prefer to read the other stuff in the mags, like Bike was back in the Mark Williams era. The only current mag I've come across that's worth a read is Sideburn. A brilliant mag, put together with style, excellent photography and not one fecking road test :)

That was the first GoldWing 1000 back in '75. Honda withdrew all advertising for two years because of the review. BIKE was pretty impartial back then.....maybe less so today.

Content in all of the mags is fairly poor these days and very obviously they do not tread on the toes of their advertisers and sponsors.
At one time a road test would give loads of useful info, pictures of clocks, riding position etc. All seems to have gone out of the window. Rarely even get an accurate tank range. When litre sports bike are within a split second of each other around a track, then things like stability on bumpy road or roll on acceleration through the gears would be more useful to most of us. Or which bike cant even manage 100miles before needing fuel.
Other useful info, such as not being able to easily show KMH on the GS lc display (digital..), meaning having to read the analogue display or sat nav unit. Nope nothing like that.
Adjusting the chain on an MTS, a royal PIA, and required half way through a two up fully laden tour. Maybe its an age thing when the practical side of things becomes more important? Instead the pages are filled with pictures and waffle. Lazy journalism.

Arsey... have a peek at this post !

Agree with all of the above !

"Bike " is still brilliant imho .... and chippys photography in said mag is hard to beat.

I gave up with all Bike mags when I read a road test on the RT which was still complaining about the double switches for the indicators......the test was on the first one which DIDN'T have the double switches. :blast

Yeah it was like Ride mag a few issues ago withe the GS write up they listed every modern gs model except the r1100gs how could they do that an put in a funduro for god sake.. :mad:without the 1100 there wouldn't be the 1150 and the other's ...

Advertising rags nothing more. Even when you register online for the extra articles beware. You will get spammed badly. I have an email account soley for purpose of MCN online nothing else . I get 50+ spam emails to that email address a day.

Bike also trod on the toes of BMW, when the first GS WC, was tested in South Africa. Bike dared suggest that the bike was unstable at speed, (A well respected U.K. Journo was killed during the test session) no BMW advertising the following month!
