Model difference question

Evening folks I have a question about seat heights me and my dad have the same bikes r1200gsa's mines a 10reg his a 12reg. Now I'm sure mine is a factory low seat model it's definitely lower than his. What I'd like to know is how do the factory make mine a low seat bike and can it be made back into a standard height bike? I much prefer the riding position of his bike.

The GS seat on high is the same as the GSA seat on low. The GS seat is also softer making it feel lower still. The GSA seat is narrower making less of the stretch to the floor. IMO, both are unreasonably uncomfortable for different reasons.

Toratech/Kahedo seats pretty much follow the same pattern over a wider range of heights.

A factory low seat has lower suspension and seat along with a shorter side and main stand. I know they did this for the GS....wasnt aware they did it for the GSA. Changing a low seat to normal height requires new shocks and stands.....fairly straight forward.

You can change the seat by simply swapping seats but you will need new stands if you fit shorter suspension.

Have you tried swapping the seats over to see where the difference lies?

Ok thanks folks first job then I will try swapping seats see how that feels. If I swapped suspension for a standard height wilbers or something similar would I also require a new set of stands?

A low seat can make the handlebars feel like ape hangers, The longer suspension will have zero effect on riding position.

This advert say that lower shocks are not a big issue on stands.

Presumably you've already figured out that the height of the seat (whether it's a low one or a standard one) can also be adjusted by altering the position of the fittings on the bike under the seat?

I recently put a pair of low miles GS shocks onto my GSA to replace the worn out ESA units. Eventually they'll get swapped for Wilbers.

BUT - I expected them to be shorter, but the GS and GSA shocks are identical length. The GS springs feel harder so sitting on the bike it feels taller than before.
