M'off - an inspection of the north american colonies

I take it the train no longer stops in Jasper as there ain't much left after last year's fires?
I think that the Rocky Mountaineer does go to Jasper from Kamloops but it doesn't then go on to Banff from there.

Don't forget... Double double and Timbits! Possibly preceded by a large helping of poutine! :drool
A visit to Tim Hortons has to be a part of this trip. It just hasn't happened yet.

I don't take sugar in coffee, so a double double is out.

We rented a car and drove back to Lake Louise.

Apart from the Fairmont Hotel, there isn't much there, but what there is is stunningly beautiful!

We went across the valley to the ski area and took a ski lift up the mountain and looked back on the Lake and the Trans-Canada Highway...

A sneaky beverage...

...before taking the chairlift back down the mountain.

It was then that we saw a wild Grizzly Bear about 50 yards from us.

Seeing that made our day!

Neither do I, but you're on holiday man! Call it cultural acclimatisation. :D and on that note , an Oilers Tee with an English accent will probably get you a beer in most bars in that neck of the Rockies. :beerjug:

As in 007? :D

The Train still stops in Jasper.
It’s a different train.
VIA Rail still run a regular passenger service Vancouver Jasper Edmonton and all the way back east of you don’t mind spending 4 or 5 days on a train.
I don’t know much about the Rocky Mountaineer. I know a few people who have taken it and say it was great. It’s kind of out of my league as is the Fairmont.
I have taken VIA rail between many times Terrace and Prince Rupert. It goes all the way to Jasper.
I really enjoyed it. Very different from a European train. Its stops and waits to let freight past grain had higher priority.
So it usually takes hours longer than scheduled but it’s at a different pace. You can by a beer and a sandwich from the conductor.
You have a seat in the main coach but you can go back to the caboose which has the obs deck you can take turns in
I liked the caboose.
It’s the cheep seats at the back and you bring your own sandwiches.
The service between Ban and Edmonton is overnight and you get just do with your back pack and byob
Or get a sleeper and 1st class service
Rocky Mountaineer is in a higher class yet.
VIA don’t do the original route.
Me I’ve done both by Grayhound, and cheep motel or hostel was my class.
Grayhound left Canada but there are other companies now
Jam is really nice but the line up turns me off
Hopefully the OP is having a great trip.

Our last day in Banff and it's pissing down!

We've taken a pleasure drive to Lake Miniwanker...

And we've succumbed to a Tim Hortons - although neither of us had a doughnut!

Tomorrow we head east across 2 time zones...

How long you off for Greg ?

This morning we embarked on one of the world's great railway journeys, The Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Kamloops.

The best will come tomorrow as we reboard the train to complete our journey to Banff.
I’ve never travelled on this train, but heard it’s amazing. Also heard it’s Orient Express price range??
Are you able to enlighten me? 😬

I was in Vancouver quite recently (probably 8 years ago) and remember 3 things:
1. Their cycle infrastructure blows our’s away. Bicycles don’t share pedestrian paths, they have their own. You can stick your mtb right on the front of the bus ffs?! lol
2. Salmon is 10 times better than our Scottish shit!!
3. There was an almost identical Armadillo to the one in Glasgow. Not sure if it’s still there though 🤔

Nearly everything is better in Canada. Especially BC and Alberta. 👍

The Tim Hortons' latte that we had yesterday was lovely - made by a First Nation franchise.

We are now at Calgary Airport and, based on yesterday's experience, headed to Mr Hortons' emporium for another coffee. This one tasted like a Grizzly Bear had shat in the cup before it served!

:barf

It's hard to describe the scale of this country!

Here's a picture of Barrie Bay:

and here is the Google map link:

If you zoom out, you'll see that this massive stretch of fresh water is just a finger of Lake Simcoe.

Zoom out further and you see that Lake Simcoe pales against Georgian Bay, which in turn, is a minor part of Lake Huron.
