M'off in the morning ... CT125 'Adventure Cub'

So how many people live up there on a permanent basis?

Could be a younger Micky on the job back in the day 😄........
Not far off ... my LE Velocette 200cc ‘Noddy’ Bike (JWR13C) and dog Patch. We ‘inherited’ him from a neighbour!

There are fifty five living on the island permanently.

An old neighbour, Jimmy Stout, has lived on Fairisle, most of his life. He called down yesterday evening for a wee dram :D
It was his father that made a citizens arrest of the crew that survived the Heinkel one-eleven German bomber in 1941.
The reports at the time said it burst in to flames on landing, but in reality as Jimmy’s father George got near the wreckage the pilot Heinz Thurz instructed the islanders to get down for he had armed a device to blow the plane up, so that it would be of no use to the enemy. Heinz Thurz visited Fairisle on a couple of occasions after the war.

Red alert for the Aurora .... “It is likely that Aurora will be visible by eye and camera from anywhere in the UK”

Weather today fine, breezy with some sunshine, Two Norman Islanders in, one this morning and one at 1500 hrs.

The Norman Islander, twin engine, high wing, with short take off and landing capability. A BN2 Islander was taking off from Fairisle in 2018 when the starboard Lycoming engine blew and the pilot had to return on just one. It landed safely :blast

Love the concrete blocks to tie down the plane!!!

We flew on these in Tanzania, absolute brick of a plane, would handle the worst weather and the worst landing strips!

Looks like a great trip…

That conrod and piston would make a great trophy if mounted on a nice piece of wood!

What a superb story in both words and pictures by an An intrepid explorer.
I have a very similar piston, with an exhaust valve head firmly embedded in it, from my old VW flat four air cooled Camper :D
Number three cylinder ran a little hotter than the others because of the tin ware of the heating system partially masked it. It was recommended to renew the valves because they were known to drop a valve head about the 55,000 mile mark!

It was about 52,000 miles when it dropped the exhaust valve on No 3 :blast

I was glad I wasn’t flying over the sea :D

Stop it tipping over when they remove the weight of then engine but I guess they have to tie them down in windy e¡weather anyway?

I’m booked on the Good Shepherd Tuesday next week, then the Northlinks ferry from Lerwick to Aberdeen.

‘Micky you’re going to need a bigger ferry!’…IMG_2114.jpeg

Dave has found his old film negatives and contact prints he has developed from the roll, but he can’t remember where he got it from. He seems to think that the pilot Lt Karl Heinz Thurz gave it to him when he revisited Fairisle. There are several pictures of islands and he reckons that with the Heinkel being a long range weather reconnaissance and Dave being a weatherman they had a common interest. The islands could be Foula or the Faroes!

The two airmen that died were thrown out of the plane when it first crashed and then slipped and slithered to its final resting place. They were found a few hundred yards back along the skid marks and disturbed grass.

I couldn’t find then in Fairisle cemetery ... but good ol’ Jimmy Stout, when he brought the bottle up t’other night, remembers them being buried here near the south light Puffin Workhouse. They were later repatriated to Germany.

Drawn by one of the survivors, not known, it represents Fairisle and the south lighthouse with a Rainbow over it. It can be seen on the wall of the Luft Museum pictured above.

I’ll put some of Daves photos up later, taken in the mid seventies.

No mention yet of the Official Secrets Act :blast
