Bit of a long shot but I'm planning on a trip with the wife and no bike to see the Monaco Classic Grand Prix in early May.

Hotels are generally hyper expensive, so anyone got any tips as to were to stay possibly commute from Nice even.

Start by looking at the chains, Ibis etc.

Then look at the privately run hotels, like Logis.

Then move on from there.

It's not too bad a 'commute' from Antibes if you have to be a distance away.
I stayed at the Premiere Classe there a few years ago and it was ok.

Have a look at hotels near the railway stations between Monaco and Nice. Cant remember which one I stayed at but the commute was easy

As tarka says look at Antibes , it will be miles cheaper!, my riding buddy who has an office in Monaco gets turfed out of his office for the duration and the rent paid for the race week covers the rent for the office for the whole year!!

Watch out for the speed camera in the tunnels before you drop down into Monte Carlo.

Menton, towards Italy, is worth a look. Have stayed there at reasonable rates during Monaco Yacht Show a few times and some of the hotels have underground parking (if you're taking the bike) and are walkable to the station (if you're not taking the bike) for a 5 minute train ride to MC.

Much closer than Antibes.

+1 more for Menton, we stayed there last year on our way back from Rome. Great location for Monaco on the Train it can only be about 5 miles from Menton. We done a couple of laps of the course on the bikes as it would have be rude not to... only made one big mistake and that was going passed the front of the Casino.. NO BIKES ALLOWED oops Lucky we were on the GS as i think we would have got a ticket from the rosser who stopped us if we were on a sports bike. As for Menton some good eating places in the town also a mc d if you really need one, maybe a bit early for sunbathing but has 2 beaches one is very stoney the other one lovely flat sand and really busy, when we were there in July it was full of Italy reg bikes.

We stayed at Cagnes sur Mer, very French, expensive up at the castle, business class just back from the (shite) beach, and an easy train run into Monaco.

We stayed in Nice and got the water bus thingy from Nice Harbour into Monaco.

Much slower but really interesting and a lovely way to arrive...

We are staying just over the border in Italy and will bus/train in each day

Menton is nice, we stopped there on our Route Des Grand Alpes tour in 2011, it was not as cheap as futher away in the mountains, but certainly a lot less than Monaco and regular busses run to and from Monaco which is only a few miles away.

I randomly came across this thread tonight. I rode past there last night with no hassle from the fuzz that were waiting on the corner. It was late and I didn't notice any signs, but I'm riding through Monaco at some point tomorrow and plan on sneaking in a quick pic of my 'lil mule outside the casino. What sort of fine are we looking at then??

Take the bike, but try to leave off at least one pannier. You will have to filter, while getting buzzed by mopeds and scooters.

We changed in the Casino Carpark - then wandered around in our shorts, with some bike gear in bags....... (class).
