Monitor image sizing

I bought a cheap Windows machine to run some programs that run easier in Windows then on a mac.
It came with Windows 8 which I didn't really like so I upgraded to Windows 10. Now the image in the monitor is way to large. The icons have doubled in size and when I run programs like excel they appear to have doubled in size. I've tried all the resizing options but the stupid program won't let me change anything. I can't even change the monitor dpi.
Any suggestions before it goes through the window?

For the desktop icons press ctrl and then scroll with the mouse. It might be that win 10 also doesn't have the graphics driver for your machine so head to the manufacturer and get their latest win 10 drivers.

Thanks for that, I re-installed everything and its working properly now. The first installation looked like a cross between windows 8 and 10.
