Morocco 3rd Party Insurance

The problem was my annual insurance was expiring too, which made things a bit more difficult.
I literally wrote down and called every number in the back of Bike/Ride.
Each time I had a reasonablew quote I asked them to confirm with the underwriters about Morocco - each had to call me back.
The cheapest I could get was £70 extra for the week!

I am having to buy my insurance at the Moroccan BCP as well.

It seems that Norwich Union, and Norwich Union Direct are two completely different companies with different rules. Norwich Union (whom I am with through Bennetts Brokers) do not cover you to Morocco. I have been told that Norwich Union Direct (whom I guess do not user brokers..) can provide Green Card cover to Morocco.

It is interesting to see that their respective websites are virtually identical less for the word "Direct" where applicable...

Travel Insurance

Going to Morocco in the spring, anybody out there know where I can get 3rd party
insurance for Morocco, before leaving this country? or must I wait til I get to the border?

Also same goes for medical insurance for when I chuck me Beemer up the road?

myself and 5 mates are doing a morocco trip march/april .our route is ceuta,fez,ar rachidia,ourzazate marrakech,and back along the coast .is tan-tan worth the spin.also i would grateful for any info on hotels,good driving roads etc.

I'm with Carole Nash, I phoned them regarding ins. for Morocco and they send me a revised certificate which did include Morocco for no extra charge.

I was there 2 years ago in March, the weather was great, We flew to Marrakech rented a car and drove over the Atlas to Ouarzazat & on south. It is a great route over the Atlas but it can get cold and even icy so watch out for forecasts and try to leave so you are in the hills at mid-day. Do watch out for kids who seem to come out of the wood if you ever stop, they just appear. Do not stop for locals on the road, sometimes they pretend to be broken down, just ride on by.
It is a great place and must be wonderful on the GS I hope to take mine later this year. Ride free.....

My bike is insured through the BMW Scheme with Equity Red Star (using Devitt as the broker).

How long did it take to get the right docs off them? I took out my policy on July 4th... on covernotes until end November, then they sent the wrong certificate and policy.. now waiting to get replacements... looks like back to Carol Nash this July!

I've not had a recent problem with ERS and Devitt, but that's perhaps because I had been with them for a few years and my account was fairly well 'settled'.

That said, I had a huge problem getting a Green Card to cover Morocco from them. They kept saying that they wouldn't provide cover but eventually did relent, provided 3rd party only cover and a Green Card.

I have had the same problem for 2004 with Poland so, and they put their prices up too, so I've switch to Norwich Union.

Last year when I went with Greg and the gang, I used "Insure & Go" whose pledge is "Travel Insurance, Annual/Single Trip, Cheap Travel Insurance" Phone 0870 9013674

Just renewed with them for the next trip in May, and it was £15.59 plus £24.99 extra cover, as I will be touring by motorcycle.

Loads of cover in the policy including cover for unusual sports, loss of luggage/money/passport etc. and repatriation to the UK in event of injury.

Use BMW Finance Travel Insurance - NB Worldwide cover required for Morocco!! - that insurance will cover your medical bills when you fall off a bike - provided it's a Beemer!

Insured the bike for Morocco last year with BMW insurance. Got green card cover but only after contacting someone on a number that Greg Masters supplied. I've looked but lost it now. Greg may still have the number.

I use BMW Travel Insurance - only covered for a bike if it's a BMW. £75.00/yr but you're covered all year.

BTW Morocco is a fantastic trip. Make sure you do the Rif and Atlas mountains. Superb scenery

Thanks for the advice.

The travel insurance seems the leasiest to sort out.

However, I must say I am enjoying the irony, that BMW Insurance will not provide motorcycle cover for the places that a GS is supposed to be at home in.

many would suggest Mondial are the best by far for personal ins.. Certainly any unfortunates who have had to use them say they were fantastic.
Thinking of going back to Maroc again (6th time now!) around easter (via portsmouth to bilbao 3/4 and algeciras to ceuta6/4, ending up in Tafroute and doing the desert loop round to tan tan and back to spain, sagres at cape st. vincent and up again for the monday 19th sailing back to p'mouth). Maybe I'll bump in to one or two of you.

www.nationwide.co.uk holiday insurance policies cover riding motorbikes as long as you have a licence & wear a helmet. Annual worldwide policy is 75 quid.

When I went outside the EU on my bike I contacted my broker, C Nash, who arranged a green card with the underwriter (Norwich Union).

I'm not organising it myself! That takes application and effort, I'm going with the Motochallenge team in late April.

That nice Nick Sanders has been aroung the block/world a few times so knows the good places to go, and his mate will follow us around with a van and vacuum cleaner (for the accidents)

All you Morocco regulars, prepare for a stupid question. Can you get unleaded out there? I was planning to get one of them y-peices and a posh exhaust for me bike but finances.....

Yes, in most places - but not everywhere.

Check before you fill. We found one garage in Fez which had an unleaded pump, but was actually dispensing leaded.

However, your bike will still run on leaded - even with the cat in place. The only downside is that your cat will never catalyse again!

Be further warned that no many garages take credit cards. They like coin of the realm but, if pushed, will take Euro notes - but that is less popular the further into Morocco you go.

If you ride across the sand to Merzouga, make sure that you have about ½ a tankful before you leave Erfoud. You use a lot more fuel per mile.

Insurance and Breakdown recovery

I just checked with BMW Emergency Services, and their breakdown and recovery services do not include Morocco.

I also checked with my insurance company (Bennetts) and they cannot cover me for Morocco either.

So, what does everyone else do ?

Some form of recovery would be nice, I am not too keen on the idea of simply abondoning a damaged or broken down bike !

My insurance renews soon, so I can easily change to another company, but who offers cover ?

I know I also need to buy local insurance in Morocco, but I wanted 'belt & braces' !!!!

Use Carole Nash and emphasise that it should include Morocco, some of the office boys think it's in Europe!

It costs no extra as I recall but shall be checking out again soon
