MOT and LEDs

Evening all. Bike failed it’s MOT due to my LED main bulb this morning “inconsistent distribution” as of 2 weeks its a major failure. Had a spare H7 on the bike so swapped it and got an instant pass but worth mowing for those running LEDs that if the beam isn’t nice and clean (no upwards light) then it’s worth swapping them before the test!

Mine was OK, what make LED were you using

I have cyclops led in my wc gs, pretty clean pattern,
passed mot last year, will see in july if its rejected

Mine passed MOT in May (Hexhead GSA) with low cost passive heatsink LED bulbs.
However the headlamp beam angle control is flakey to say the least. The only way I can get it to dip low enough (with any bulb) is to pack the underside rubber grommet.

BTW the LEDs fit with emitters shining sideways.

I was running a cyclops main beam. Adjusted to maximum dip. Reflectors point sideways and all fitted correctly.

My beam pattern was not clean at all hence the failure.

My bike with a hid conversion on dipped beem only passed as per usual.

It should be a fail on a bike as well, the following from section 4.1.4 Compliance with Requirements:

Some motorcycles may be fitted with high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps. Existing halogen headlamp units shouldn’t be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.

Lots are being passed with very loud exhausts. It’s the law!

My MOT man checks the dipped beam pattern and makes sure main beams lights up. Dipped beam must be acceptable for cutoff. Main beam simply has to light up.
My LED powered dip gave an excellent pattern so it passed. It was done in a dark building (not simply against a wall chart) so any scatter would be obvious.

Wait until the Ministry clamp down and either set up a couple of MOT stations regarding LED headlight bulbs or visit following a test and insist a vehicle is retested in their presence and find it has been passed initially with LED bilbs then the sh*t will hit the fan

Can't you just remove the HID ballasts and bulbs and refit normal bulbs ???

Yes nothing to stop you - just as cat bypass pipes on cars are fitted and removed ..

Like I just swapped my LED for an H7 to pass. Nothing to stop me swapping back other than if I got pulled over I could get done for having a defective light.

The metal top on my LED headlight bulb looks superficially like an ordinary halogen.
Not used on the GS but H4 bulbs often have a metal cap over the top so light can only escape forwards via the reflector. That almost completely hides the bulb.
So unless you are daft enough to drive with headlights that scatter light everywhere nobody would ever know what type of light source you are running.

well its fairly easy to see by the light output if its halogen, led or hid its not rocket science is it they all have their own "look"

Plus if anyone looks, the bulbs are look different, so you can normally tell by looking at the bulb if its HID, LED or normal H7s. I only found out Monday night that I had a HID fitted to my low beam on my RT, someone had it fitted before I bought the bike. My mate said your dipped light is bright, so we looked and its a HID bulb. On the RT the low beam is not on if you have the DLRs on, so I just thought my lights were ok at night. Guess I'll have to get it converted back now

I asked re the changed MOT at the place I always go to and he said as long as the beam looks ok, they will pass it, got HID which is like a solar event happening.

Hey may not be as “sensible “ for an unknown/possible planted vosa bike.
