Motad y-piece fitting...

Hi all,

I bought a new Motad y-piece and tried to fit it yesterday - problem is it fit really badly.

The welded plate that hangs down and has the screw-holes to attach it to the centre-stand brackets was about 1cm off and the inlets that fit to the heads are also at a bit of an angle - not massive but enough to think "this is a poor fit"

It's all eventually fitted (with a fair bit of persuasion) but there's obviously a tiny bit of air escaping from the head-to-ypiece connection as you can hear that 'wet-raspberry' sound escaping from the area (and feel it)

Question is, does a little bit of air escaping hurt? Should I just get some silicone sealant to try and plug the air gap or should it fit better than that and I should demand a replacement?

UPDATE - have spoken to the supplier and they sounded friendly enough - am going to send them a few pictures when I can take some this weekend - get their opinion as to if they think they need replacing as by their own admission, "the odd one can come of the jig a bit off and worsen as it cools".

They also said it's pretty common to need to bend the centre-stand plate (with the threaded tube) a bit to get it to fit.

It doesn't look too bad though, it's more that they're blowing slightly.

Otherwise the solution is to seal them. If I was to try to seal the join, what am I looking for?

'Exhaust assembly paste'?

Use the paste that you can squeeze from a tube, rather than the stuff in a tub, it's usually a finer mix so more suitable for joint application.

Having taken the y-piece back off yesterday it's clear one of the inlets was way off angle-wise so I sent the dealer some pics of it.

The good folks of Sandy Bike Spares told me to send it back and have a new one on the way to me today and will even collect the duff one.

That's bloody good service if you ask me

Not at all - any manufacturer can have a duff product every now and again - plenty of praise Motad y-pieces on this forum - shouldn't allow one lemon to soil the whole brand.

ALSO I know I said it's a Motad y-piece, but I'm could be wrong - I was under the impression that the Motad and Sandy Bike Spares y-pieces are the same product?

I could be wrong.

Anyway, I'm reserving judgement for now - certainly Sandy Bike Spares have been very helpful/understanding thus far and a new y-piece is on it's way to me.

Nope - but then I've had 3 types of exhaust/y-piece before and never had to

Also don't want to risk a leak at the header.

I've never had a problem fitting motad Y pieces, but plenty of other problems with copies. You should get clamps with the Y piece ( motad supply clamps with their unit) as the bmw clamps are too big.

You get what you pay for.

Indeed - I'll try to fit the replacement tonight and if it's no good I'm gonna shell out for a Remus.

The replacement didn't fit either

Just to clarify, they were NOT Motad y-pieces, but independently manufactured, sourced and sold by Sandy Bike Spares

I'd like to give them the benefit the doubt and say they were both just duff ones (especially as they were very friendly people), but it's too much of a coincidence - they were just poorly made - well, they were well made structurally, but they were both misshapen.

The replacment's gone back for a refund.

So have gone and ordered a Remus y-piece instead - sod it, I've tried the rest, might as well go for the best (though I'm a bit gutted i just missed out on a second-hand one for £90 on eBay... )

As I said, lesson learnt.

not that you are having problems but that it wasn´t Motad y-piece since i have one waiting.

Can i just confirm that Motad Y collectors are made by us here in the UK- they fit and work well- and if in the rare case of a fitting issue you can speak direct with us- or the man that welded it!- any other similar looking products are NOT Motad and as you have found can cause problems

The influx from the cheap labour markets has caused many similar fitting issues- because these cheap imported products often are just poor copies/rippoffs of the Motad product . with rising costs in china, cheap is now refering to the quality rather than the final price in many cases with "proper" uk stuff being very competitive

Shame you didnt get a chance to fit a Motad- remus I agree is a nice product but its more expensive becuase you are paying for an importer to deliver it and pay the euro price in our very undervalued £!!!- Motad is cheaper because you can buy direct from our dealers or indeed the factory
