I'm just about to order a new battery (the cold snap has exposed the existing battery's vulnerability - its only 2.5yrs old!).

Anyway, i've noticed the dims of the Motobatt are a margin wider/taller than the original. I am interested to know from those of you using this battery if it really does just drop in place of the OEM? Or is there some fiddling?

This is the battery I'm looking to get.

Cheers.

I'm not sure where you are getting your measurements from, but my OEM battery (Exide Gel 12-19) is larger (length 185mm X height 170mm X width 80mm) than the battery you propose to fit. So I can't see a problem, or am I missing something.

Save yourself some money and get one of these

I've used it on a few battery s that I thought were dead , and it's recovered them all . Not sure how bit they are still good even in this cold weather

I fitted one this very day. Apart from cursing the design of the GS which necessitates removing (or at least loosening and propping) the tank to change a battery, it did just slot in. The terminal posts are very badly designed, which makes it difficult to tighten them unless you have ball ended allan keys to hand. The top of the post impedes access to the allen bolt which holds them in place. Other than that it all fits. Took about an hour, which included removing and refitting a baglux tank cover. Starter motor spun noticably faster than the old one.

Incidentally, the old one apears to be the original fitted to the bike from new. The bike is a 2002 GSA. Amazing really.

Thanks for the comments! Some interesting info.

Ian. I got the OEM dims from the MW site...and they show a slight difference :nenau . But based on JonF's comments, it is a straight swap.

JetJock - thanks for the steer. I'll look into it. Looks a neat unit from the image.

yes its the right one and its a tighter fit and a little taller. i would not recommend them tho mine failed just after a year motobatt and the seller were not interested.
the proper charging voltage for a gel/agm battery should be about 14.5 to 14.8 volts the standard alternator charges about 13.8 to 14 if your lucky so thats why it failed improper volt charge. you can modify the alternator to out put a higher volt if you want to go down that road

I've just looked at those chargers. They look really very good. Regardless of getting a new battery, they look so portable and capable they'd be worth having anyway! I've not seen them before, so thanks for the info :thumby:

No worries . Try it . I was sceptical but this one seems to work . It'll be interesting to hear your feedback if you get one

I just fitted another motobatt battery . it fits perfectly no drama at all. The only issue is with motobatt battery is the terminal heads. if you have a few bits and pieces wired to the battery terminals that you just need to find out how to secure them as the screws are very small .
by the way i ordered it for 69 on ebay recently.

My local spanner men talked me out of buying a Motobatt because they could never get one to fit on an 1150GS. They had one in stock to but refused to sell it to me because they knew it would come straight back. Bought a new Exide one instead.

Rob, your story is jogging my memory of posts on here about different sized battery trays... Maybe someone with more knowledge and experience (or a better memory :-) can clarify?

Mine is a late GS with the servo, so my reckoning would be that the battery tray is on the larger side...if there are indeed two sizes.

Yeah, mine is an 02 non-servo so you might be right. The Exide I fitted is a tight fit. If I remember correctly the Motobatt was 2mm deeper than the Exide so I definitely wouldn't fit in my tray.

I've used MotoBatt on two 1150 GS's and one 1200 with no issues apart from those mentioned by JonF above. On the 1200 I had to source slightly longer screws than those which came with the battery because of a couple of accessory leads on the positive terminal, but other than that, all good.

go to, county battery .co.uk cheap as chips where I got mine from , I modified my battery carrier on my r1150rt bmw takes a 30 amp hr battery now spins it up no sweat !!

Well, I'm no mechanic, but I found no difficulty fitting mine. Sounds to me like the one your mechanic had was the wrong model.

My motobatt died instantly when my starter motor smoked...double whammy !:( I put in an Exide.

I'm using a Motobatt MB51814 on my 04'GSA (had servo but now removed) & it's a snug fit (doesn't rattle or move around), been in for a couple of years and no problems so far but it is usually connected to an Optimate 4 all winter :D
