Motorcycle security when away from home

Without a MachineArt Moto Mudsling being installed it would most definitely fit. Thinking of compromising a bit of dirt for a far more secure system now 👍
Thanks for that Trotter... appreciated. Just ordered. I actually bought from Team Cycles... £269 but via TopCashBack, you get 1.05% back... so another £2.82 saved ! (Every little helps...)

Thank you for the code. X1 ordered.
Now as to what chain..?

Goes through fine but I still has flaws with spokes being cut and screws being undone releasing the arm and lock, riding the the rear wheel with a chain and other layers on the front etc definitely seems to be the best deterrent I reckon?

I have embedded the pictures for you.

I wouldn’t worry too much about cut spokes and undone screws. If they want the bike that much (it’ll be stripped, most probably) they’ll just turf it on its side in a van.

Sad but true..sounds bizarre but I bet a £20 cover would be more effective than a 20kg chain and £300 lock as a deterrent 😮

I’ve seen a few mentions of putting a cover on the bike. Mostly on American forums, how does a very thin fabric cover stop the bike being stolen? I feel pretty sure that a substantial lock or chain and lock would work better. Surely the thieving scumbags are capable of just lifting the cover off?

I have X2 Abus disc locks in my top box at all times and now use them a lot more ..everywhere I go .. even for a few minutes. We have all seen the vids of how quick they get pushed/ridden/lifted away.

We take a cover on our bike holidays, it folds up small but it’s not a full sized one and leaves the pots and below exposed, however it serves 2 purposes.
1. It helps keep the sun and rain off the bike if it’s left out in the pavement at the accommodation.
2. It helps hide the ‘attractiveness’ of the bike. We’ve been sat within sight of the bike on occasions whilst having a drink or dinner, without the cover people stop and look, but with the cover on they just pass on by, it really is quite a marked difference. I’m not saying dedicated thieves will do the same but every little helps.

Otherwise it’s a Roadlok, Litelock X1, BMW disc lock and the alarm… the balance between what you can reasonably take on a 2-up trip and acceptable security.

Not forgetting Wapping’s lb of butter of course!

Currently, I have a discussion with a friend that goes along the lines of....’if thieves are using angle grinders to cut off disc locks or the disc then why not have a lock where it’s difficult to get a grinder in?”

There is a place on the 1250 paralever that will go through the disc and no way will a grinder get in there without destroying the paralever, disc or spokes.. As a result it doesn’t need to be beefy.. I’ll report back.

I had an attempted bike theft a few years back in Denmark. I was in the shower and heard a knock at the door of the air b&b.

When I opened the window a startled guy asked me for a lighter in English. I burst out of the flat wearing a towel because the bike was on the drive around the corner. As I cleared the gateway matey #2 got up from the driveway beside the bike chain and the both sauntered off as though nothing was amiss.

Now I stay in accommodation with the bike outside my window, chained to an object with a cover over it when I can.

Bike theft is on the rise in Scandinavia, so bring a lock.

I thought... and I could be wrong... that it was popular for bikes to be stolen, then broken down and sold as parts. So as long as the bike still rolls... they don't really care if they lose a few parts in the process of chopping off locks etc. But that's just what I've heard... it could be wrong.

I think the best solution to bike theft is to lock it away totally out of sight... and even then, don't publish the fact.

Probably the best solution is not to own one. Or, if people must, then just take a modicum of care over it. Many don’t.
Instead of bikermates asking for biker friendly hotels should they not be asking for thief unfriendly hotels ?
