Motorcycle security when away from home

Dijon, was recommended on the forum as a great place to stay, just recently.

Stay anywhere, within reason, and take sensible precautions.

PS If there are fewer bikes in the cities, thieves will move into the countryside. Be afraid; be very afraid.

Avoid Dijon .
It doesn’t cut the mustard

Exactly! Frankly I'd be more worried about riding in UK than in France for thefts.... As stated above avoid the big cities unless secure parking is allowed. I personally find France some of the best riding country in Europe. I am there 3-4 times a year and never had any worries.....
Makes me laugh .
People writing off a whole country as its riddled with theft .
Yet the UK is the worst of the lot !

Back in June we grabbed a last minute hotel in Lille via booking.com and paid with credit card. When we arrived I was horrified with the area and the locals walking the streets so chained the bikes to the reception railings but in full view of the road and car park. The 24hr reception guy assured they would be fine but it didn't stop me going outside twice during the night. It was red hot with thunderstorms and the local BMW driver was performing in his rear wheel drive donut machine. At 6am when I got up the bikes ......... remained untouched🤔. Either the locals aren't what I judged them to be or our bikes are not desirable or shiny enough 😎.

I've read the review a couple of times now, can't see what makes it better than the Hiplok, is it the price as grinding or attack doesn't seem to be any better or worse.
Seems to have similar resistance to Hiplock DXL 1000 but that is £329 and S2 is £219 so mainly price plus a bigger aperture .

Tbh. Anywhere I go, I'm paranoid about the bike.
If I'm camping, I have a MotoTent style tent and the bike is in with me.
If I'm stopped somewhere, I'll stop where other bikers gather, safety in numbers?
Else I'll try and keep it within sight if that's at all possible.
If I'm off the beaten track (sight seeing in the middle of nowhere) I'll worry a bit less.

Obviously, if they take the bike, that's one huge headache.
The other issue is if you catch them in the act (I have done so once) the damage to the bike is (or could be) already done.
Broken steering lock and an unrideable bike, then the headache of getting the thing fixed.

It's a bit of a shame that you have to worry about your expensive pride and joy for the sake of some scallywags, who then dictate, to some level, where you (plan to) ride
You panic too much

Just had 8/9 days in ireland and mainly stayed in the countryside, but also sayed in 2 towns and just put the bikes in the car park at acommodation

Weren't in sight, but were untouched - one of the bikes was an auto, so once in Park, it cannot be wheeled without ignition on...........just lifted into a Van

If it goes, you have insurance

You don't have to worry...you either choose to or are just a worrier by nature. If you look at it all logically, you'd not have a bike in the UK..fly somewhere to rent...as the UK "feels like" the worst place for bike theft. (Without research, no idea if it is?) What there is now, is social media. So every single theft gets talked about on several sites and hey presto....the angst for those who get angst, ramps up. Just take sensible precautions including locks, where you park etc...

I have said it many times but its worth repeating about securing your motorcycle, especially when touring.....

"Its a fucking long walk home"

But thats if you can get insurance…….
A bit off topic but I was just astounded that I couldn’t insure a bike in my location in London. So basically some insurance company decides if I can own a bike …
Sorry but that’s just absurd. And no amount of money made any difference…

Anyway where I tend to ride there is usually good parking and if not a disc lock and P in ASA mode does the trick. If they want it, they will take it…..

Its an arms race.

How long until they beef up grinding disks with harder or more abrasive particles and stronger resin binders so that battery grinders can get through these reinforced U-locks ?

They probably already exists for tougher jobs and the crims haven't adopted them yet due to cost or ignorance.
