Motorcycle security when away from home

Its an arms race.

How long until they beef up grinding disks with harder or more abrasive particles and stronger resin binders so that battery grinders can get through these reinforced U-locks ?

They probably already exists for tougher jobs and the crims haven't adopted them yet due to cost or ignorance

Let's hope these lock makers don't rest on their laurels and at least try to stay ahead of the game. It is indeed an "arms race"

Just my opinion. Insurance is a necessary evil only there to compensate the other guy if you have an accident thats your fault. Insurers, it seems to me, are not interested in you unless there is a third party to get their money back when something does eventually happen.

I have a Litelock X1 already. I don't think locks will help when they can just pick the bike up. Albeit 250kg+ of bike won't deter them.

I would reconsider France but would think very, very carefully about where I leave the bike

I would want to be within sprinting distance if the tracker went off. Yes I would risk injury to chase them off

That’s arguably good advice in any country. Just because say, Germany, doesn’t feature in many ‘Your bike WILL be stolen’ reports, that doesn’t mean that thefts do not occur. Likewise, assuming that - just because you are not in a city - the theft risk reduces to zero, is similarly erroneous. Don’t fall into the trap of ever fully believing: “It’s so quiet, nothing will happen here. I read they leave the keys in the ignition”. The fellows who tell you this, will not be around when you find your bike gone, trust me. Only your insurer will be there to assist and dig you out of the mess.

Rural France is a lot more likely to suffer less thefts than most parts of Britain imho, so whatever you use in the UK should be fine for France...I just can't see the issue here? Targeted thefts in urban areas frequently involve a van (probably nicked too) and three or four beefy guys so weight of bike is no prevention against theft. Chaining it to something solid is as decent a deterrent as you're likely to provide, along with other locks made to be a PITA to remove. I usually D lock front and back wheels as well as use a chain, and alarmed disc locks. If they nick one of my bikes secured this way, I've done as much as I could have done

Don’t go to cities, as your bike will (probably) be stolen. It’s difficult / expensive / impossible to insure (an expensive) motorcycle in London.

There is a direct correlation between the two, I guess.
