Muc Off and Warranty

I've just been to my BM agent with corrosion around the spokes on the centre hub of my rear wheel on a Nov 08 GSA.

He asked what I used to clean the bike with and when I said I used Muc Off he told me BMW won't deal with any corrosion warranty claims if Muc Off has been used. Apparently BMW sent a memo around about this.

Apologies if this topic has been discussed, but search didn't bring it up.

Any road up, I started again and said I didn't use Muc Off to whic he said excellent, I'll order your new wheel sir. (lovely man)

Well I have used diluted Muc off and never had any problems, and never seen a memo.
 
Having had a wheel on my first adventure trashed by someone :augie using the wrong wheel cleaner, I was very nervous about what to use on my 08 GSA. However went of the Off Road Skills Training in South Wales last year and at the end of the two days noticed the bikes being cleaned, including the instructors GSA's with Muc Off! "How oftern chaps?" Cleaned with Muc Off and a steam cleaner after every course for the year they are used! Must be 30/40 times a year?

I thought if its good enough for them.....

Been using it since and no problems although the only way to get them looking really good is car polish and elbow grease.
 
Have to say I was a bit sceptical that a cleaner would cause corrosion. It is quite bad around the spoke adjusters and only since Nov 08. The bike has only done 1800miles and I've done the last 1200 in dry weather since March just pottering about since I bought it.

The rest of the bike is OK so far......anyway never mind my wife and I are riding it to Gibraltar and back all around Spain in 6 weeks time... can't wait!! :bounce1
 
Your dealer is taking the pish.

Cleaners don't cause corrossion.

Outsourced parts from 3rd world countries do.

Just come back from Spain.

Thoroughly recomend Seville. Stay in old town area - just lovely. We stayed at Casas de Juderia. Bit pricey but secure bike parking under hotel and right in heart of old city. It is a series of old houses in the Jewish querter and while quirky and slightly down at heel is really nice and fascinating with undergorund tunnels and all sorts.

Also Salamanca, beautiful town square and if you get away from the square towards the church some really nice local bars.

Thanks Rich... I'm doing Cherbourg, Chaine du Puyes, Gorge du Tarn, Millau with a couple of mates and then I'm nipping across to Madrid to pick Mrs Bob up at the airport. Then Guadalupe, Ronda for 2 days, El Chorro, Sierra Nevadas, Almeria desert, Huescar, Cuenca, Alcaniz and then dropping Mrs B off at Barcelona airport before nipping across to Nice to do the Route de Grande Alpes and then back to Calais.

However your suggestions sound good so I will adjust to take in the old town.

Muc Off took the shine right of the paint on my old airheads frame, left it a lovely matt Finish, would have been great If I 'd wanted a matt black frame! :mad:

Some are notorious for it. Muc off is one of them.
It's fine IF you ensure it doesn't dry on the bike before rinsed off and if you ensure it is thoroughly rinsed off.

I tried it once and wouldn't buy it again because it didn't seem very good at cleaning the motorcycle. Much prefer Autoglym's equivalent.
 
Having just bought my first BMW (Secondhand I might add) I have a new bottle of Muc Off in the garage that now wont be seeing any use :(
 
The salesman at my dealer warned me not to use Muc Off, saying that he had experience of it damaging finish. His explanation was that it was a caustic/corrosive mixture....

I have though had experience of Autoglym motorcycle cleaner dulling the finish on the black engine casings of a Triumph Tiger.

Car shampoo is it for me now :thumb2
 
Muc-off turned all the shiny black bits matt; and the anodised rims went 'milky' on an 1150GS. Shite - won't use it again.
HG brown gel stuff is ace for cleaning the bike and the car. £18-ish for 5 litres - has lasted me four years so far.
 
When asked how you clean it, you should always say "In accordance with the manual". There is no way, without a lot of expense, they can prove to the contrary.

I've had BMW dealers tell me to use 50% dilute mucoff, but I now use Castrol Greentec, which I was told was recommended.

... Erm, 'cos that's what my dealer uses and stocks. They are also the cheapest supplier, albeit by a whopping 20p a litre :rob
 
Don't forget Sdoc100 comes in 2 varieties.
The expensive deep wash that everyone seems to stock and the regular wash that is a lot cheaper but tends to be hidden out of sight in it's blue bottles.
