I need to replace my System 5 and having considered another 5, (no!) Tour-X or Hornet, I think its a Shoei Multithingy for me..........so, can those with experience tell me if a pinlock and a whisper kit are worthy/necessary additions. Also, recommendations as to where to buy cheaply ! (via mail order) would be gratefully received.

TIA

There is a thread in this section about the Multitech. It is a far lighter helmet than the System 5

Shoei Pinlock isretty much like the BMW double glazed visor insert for the System 5. I have used both antifog systems and they both do an equally good job - recommended.

Multi-tech comes with whisper-strip and chin mesh in the box

As above. Only thing you have to be careful about is that the fit of the Shoei has changed, let's say from the multitech. Quite tight cross the forehead.

I brought one last year at the NEC £220. Great helmet, and a lot quieter than my Raid 2. I tried the whisper kit and front chin gadget, then took them off, a bit cumbersome for my liking, kept getting in the way when lifting the front up and down (boom mike) and the bit on the back (whisper kit) seemed a little too snug for me. But it did make it a lot quieter.
What I will say is the chin bar seems very close to the chin (going by the gap on the Raid 2) which feels odd, or is that norm for this type of helmet. It feels like there ought to be more room incase you have an off and smack the front of the helmet hard. Jaw bone broke then, or am I being a bit paranoid :nenau
Pinlock great bit of kit, even better than a fog city and they where first class.

So..................as its not easy to try a fitting anywhere near to where I live, I was assuming the 59-60 was going to fit me (as my other lids are this size) - should I consider that the Multitech is a tight fit....and go for the 61-62?

I wouldn't buy any helmet without trying it on. Seriously, you need to try before you buy as you cannot return a helmet and every helmet is a slightly different fit. Find your nearest dealer and have a rideout.

Cheers.

Have a Raid2, XR1000 and Multitec. All size 59-60 and fit is the same to my head.

I find the Raid quietest. The Mutitec has more edges to make noise, but is still good for the flip front functionality. Recommended.

I've got to say I just bought a system 5 despite having an almost new multitech. The multitech is just SO NOISY. It was activating the autocom all the time, and I once wore it without earplugs and it was torture.
Also, cos it's got worse aerodynamics (I think), I suffered a lot more side buffetting and 'er on the back got more buffetting. These last points are speculation, but careful speculation.
We've just done a 2 week trip to Europe, and came back much less buffetted (does anyone else get 'headrush' after a long day ?) than when I went with the shoei for a week in May. And in the reflection in the dials, I can see her head behind me bouncing in the wind much less.

So, it's shoei for around town (it IS a more comfortable fit and lighter), and system 5 for touring/distance.

just bought a multitec after getting rid of the bloody awful tour-x and its great!
A lot lighter and much quiter. It is tighter across the forehead and i found it a bit uncomfortable at first, seemed to slip down over my eyebrows a bit. Tried it with my thin balaclava and it is really comfortable now. You need to try on and see how it fits, you can change the side cheak pads which i did and got a perfect fit. Im a large 59-60 in my previous 3 aria's and the 59-60 in the Shoei is fine. Great lid and im glad i changed
Buy off Helmetcity uk and you'll get all the usual freebies plus a £60 paddock jacket as well. Just try on and see what size and what cheek pads you need first then let them know your requirments. worked for me.
