As some of you are aware, in the name of scientific research, (so dont shout at me) I am looking for the elusive oomph. (more top end) My first post was regarding cams. Will 1100 RS cams go into the GS? Well it seems they will and they are in the post. Once I have tried them I will give you an update. However, RS bits led me to thinking. A lot of RS/RT owners change their inlet tubes for GS ones to give them more bottom end and better drive-ability especially for touring.

My thoughts were, lets try it the other way around. RS inlet tubes on the GS for more top end. Motorwork supplied some secondhand ones off the shelf. The overall diameter is much bigger than the GS ones by approx 6mm. They are also shorter, extending into the air box by only about 20mmm. They look big an mean.

So, after fitting a Remus Revolution can, I tried the bike..... better, much better. I then tried the RS inlet rubbers.... better again. More breating at the top end. There is a slight loss in lower midrange, but upper midrange is wayyy better.

To describe the difference. On a particular road, the bike in its previous form, with a good run out of the corner leading onto the straight, could manage 120-125 maxed out. This time, without a good run out of the corner (cos it was covered in cow shit) and just blasting it down the straight, reached 130 before it reached a major dip in the road. So it seems to work on top end.

Drive-ability was difficult to assess through the seat of the pants test. It is such a lazy engine I have always found this diffiuclt. It still pulls 5th at 1500 rpm and drives away comfortably but I need to compare this against my mates GSs to see if I have lost too much. Time will tell.

As a postscript to this tale. As I went over the crest and dropped into the dip in the road at 130 (butt clenching time) something whacked me in the back then clipped the back of my helmet. Slammed the brakes on and stopped. Got off the bike, top box still there, oh bugger, where's me pillion seat gone. I found it 20 minutes later about 30 meteres in the woods alongside the road. It must have hit every damn tree on its way into the woods. Bugger, blast and damn, one shagged pillion seat.

Going faster is getting expensive.

Must go faster III due in about two weeks, speed loons stay tuned.

Have you bought the right bike? You seem to be replacing everything that makes the GS such a flexible, all-round bike. I'm sure a cheaper way of doing what you're apparently trying to achieve is to find a way of putting a set of GS handlebars & a beak on a 1150RS....

MikeO;)

Oh dear Mike, how you miss the point. I will continue to post my findings for those of us who want just that little bit more from the GS. You know.... the ones that buy chips and cans and Y pieces an things.

And for those who wish to point me in the direction of another bike, perhaps you need to know that I have owned in excess of one thousand, yes thats right ONE THOUSAND motorcycles. (I used to be a motorcycle main dealer before I got a normal life)

I have trophys for Road Racing, Moto-X and Enduro (actually a poxy little medal) Been riding since I was 16, its the big 50 this year...arrghhh!

And the GS is the best bike I have had so far. Thats the GS, not the RS, not the RT, not the S, not the R, not a bloody Hayabusa or a Jap crotch rocket (cos I have ridden them all)... but the GS.

Broken all kinds of bones, well versed with Hospital food and ( much to the annoyance of some) I am still here!

Keep the faith :D Oh I do love a wind up :D

Going faster advice.

Hi all!
Get rid of useless weight.
1. Cut your toenails.
2. Shave your head.
3. Empty your pockets.
4. Dont eat in the winter so you loose much of your body weight!
:idea :idea
Klem, Liv.;)

So what's the point I'm missing? I'm also altering my GS to a particular purpose, I just don't understand what you're aiming at. I bought my bike because it was the closest vehicle in production to do what I want it to do. I'm now 'tuning' it to do that job. What do you want from yours? Your reply hardly illuminates.....

MikeO:confused:

ps I'm very happy that you've owned so many bikes:D

I am enjoying this.

Q: "So what's the point I'm missing?"

A: "I am looking for the elusive oomph. (more top end)" - First paragraph of my first post.

Q: "What do you want from yours? Your reply hardly illuminates"

A: "those of us who want just that little bit more from the GS" - First paragraph of my reply.

Liv, please dont shave your head, it doesnt look good on a woman.... but who am I to judge? Whatever lights your fire.

ps: I am also happy I have owned that many bikes.
pps: I was even happier selling them all ( and so was my Bank manager) :D
pps: I also avoid things like the Dartford tunnel - head wont fit :clap

Sombody's missing the point!
Keep hold of your rattles.
Please keep us up to date with your efforts.
Not everybody owns
A caravan!!!!!

Interesting

Panz

Interesting about the intakes.

When I bought my power chip they also recommended shortening
the tubes where they enter the air box, it sounds like you have effectively done that.

They also talk about 'special BBPower camshaft' has anyone tried one of these ?

Have you thought about fitting a nitrous kit ?

Hey Bandit,

I know what you are on about with the recommendation from BBpower about the tubes, two of my mates have the chip fitted. The main difference is, where you would remove the internal air tube, which clips to the external one and hides inside the air box, al la BBpower recommendation. Replacing the original with the the RS one gives a much bigger diameter between the air box and the injector. It is very obvious once you look at them, the GS tube is reduced in diameter from air box to injector, whereas the RS is parallel. It looks big!

Had a chat to Motoworks about the BBpower cams, as they are agents, but so far they havnt had any from BB. They are also agents for Boxer-performance in Australia, who is also messing about with cams and hope to have something from him in the spring/summer.

I dont know if I am doing him any favours here but the guy I talked to, who seems very knowledgable on the subject at Motorworks, is a guy called Darren. Give him a bell!

Cheers :D

PS Bandit,

I know some people think I am a bit wierd, but not Nitrous Oxide wierd.

Nitrous Oxide.....just makes me laugh!

Keep the faith :D

BBP

I am in email contact with Bernaud at BBP.

The cams cost 380eur.

They also do a higher lift cam, which have to be used with high compression pistons.

You can't beat nitrous, my bandit makes an extra 100bhp with the gas full on !
