my £230 headlamp bulb

I expect you will all think I am some kind of cnut.

I changed my headlamp bulb the other day and fitted the new free clip that SBW gave me.

When pushing it in, the nylon ball and socket that is part of the pillion dip lever popped apart.

I unit is completely sealed and I considered a warranty claim but it seemed too much trouble as I dont live near a dealer.

So I drilled a hole to try and reassemble it.

Thought it had worked but come the night, the beam so so high no one even flashed me.

Took the lamp off at work today (its only 2 bolts and a couple of block connectors)
And drilled another hole and then another.

At one point the drill grabbed and broke the reflector, at another it tore through the wires.

I then opened out the holes with a larger drill by hand and put a deep cut in my thumb.

Then I got the junior hacksaw out and cut out the wiring connector.

Finally the ball and socket could be reached and I got them back together.

Cant fix the high beam wire and the headlamp now looks like swiss cheese.

Apart from that, jobs a good 'un

OMG! I've so been there, but with cheaper consequences.
Why do we carry one when we know its likely to go wrong?

Shit happens indeed, fixed mine with a good tug on some lockwire I threaded round the ball, total cost, nothing. Wish you were closer to Stafford I'd have done it for free

Guzzis use a suspiciously similar method as the R100GS (square headlight model).the Guzzi one admits to being the same as a feckin Fiat bambino!

my Guzzis light is held in by cable ties, two washing machine transit bolts and springs (for adjustment ) and a sheet of plastic cut from the back of a plastic office chair. i kid you not.

and i can post a tutorial about using cat food tins and wire wool as exhaust baffles if you like!

Easier and safer to take the lamp off to change the bulbs particularly if you have fat cold fingers.

I've also transformed what should have been a simple remedial, in to total devastation.

this is definately true, it comes out so easy.

I notice there is a split along the nylon cup so maybe it had a flaw anyway.

Am pretty sure I was not that rough with it.

Will be happy if I can manage the next few days without any other disasters.
