Rusty silencer bracket.:(
 
I've been aware that the voltmeter glass looks hazy. I looked closer today:eek the haziness is actually a spiders web inside the glass, complete with dead baby spiders:eek:

referring to me or the bike:P
 
Looks good I want one instead of my K RT. are the silencers stainless ??? may explain why the weld to the mild steel bracket has failed. you could drill a slot in the bracket and use a large jubillee clip to hold it in place.
 
Silencers are Stainless, if this gets repaired, I will put washers under the bracket to let air circulate, hopefully be less of a rust trap. The L/H hand silencer needs dropping a tad anyway, as the left hand pannier has a silencer impression "moulded" into it's bottom!

M/S on S/S causes the M/S to rust then, never heard that before?

from what i know of welding stainless to mild steel you always get a brittle weld because of the differences in the steel. and as far as i know you have to use MMA with specialist rods to get the best chance of it sticking. the other option would be to make up some stainless brackets and tig weld them on (knowing what its like to work stainless plate by hand is why i suggested the semi permanent jubilee idea) :thumb2:thumb2
 
our wires are crossed, I was hoping to get the M/S plates welded to the original bracket, not having S/S plates welded in place. The silencers are bolted to the brackets.
 
Mr. Rapid response here has finally got the silencer and rusting bracket problem under way.
Took it to a mate who is a super dooper welder, he has all the certs. for petro chem stuff, and has his own TIG set in the garage.

Used a disc grinder to remove the silencers from the rusting bracket:eek: This was after using a chisel and mallet to try to remove the remains of the rusted cap head screw, if I'd known it was that secure:blast:blast:blast I would not have fretted and bothered getting it repaired.:rob:blast:D

See how it turns out now.

My garage seems nice and spacious, might be time to sell it. There again, once the welding is done, I won't have the fear that the silencer is about to fall off when hitting a pothole.
