My bike is nearly 2 years old - now what?

I'd go out and ride it if I were you...another two years and it'll be worn in nicely :D

(seriously....boxer twins need 15k miles ;) )

i.e. Not the £1.99 a gallon type of oil thats available from supermarkets and such like places.

Steppers...you`re forgetting he`s on a 1200.

He`d be better off getting the £1.99 a gallon stuff because the oil will last longer than the bike anyway :D :D :D

When the bike is 2 years old, I think I will do some of my own maintenance. I would still let the dealer do the service but I might top the engine oil up myself as they charge me 25 pounds for each top up and it only takes them 10 minutes.

Where could I get some oil from and what sort should I get? I had a look around Halfords but didn’t see any specifically for BMW bikes.

Do your own servicing its easy, or find a better dealer for servicing, you dont need to stick to BMW dealers now.
Or ride it up to Motorad Central up here where you'll not get ripped off and its a good run ;)

I use Duckhams 20/50 in my 1100, and at a tenner a pop it's served well.

I did my thesis on oils :rob
I wouldn't use Duckhams to lubricate a hinge :(
It seized at 2lbs weight on 1 foot bar over a ball bearing running in 1cc of the stuff.
At the other end of scale we bent bar with 20 lbs with Catrol R:eek: never seized.
Castrol XL 20/50 and Castrol GP [Castrol was owned by Wakefields then] came out best in mineral oils. Esso tiger 20/50 next.
One very surprising result at the time was Silkolene reclaimed oil:eek
it came out almost = with Castrol!!! but being a recycled oil was not eligible in the test:nenau

I only use Castrol 20/50 or Silkolene Classic 20/50 in my bikes.
Nothing else:thumb2

I really hope to keep the bike for a while. If I do what I have planned then I will be upto 20+ thousand in the next year and a half.

I'm sure the bike will still be going strong but I should imagine by that point I will simply fancy a change.

Cheers

Most sensible thing I have ever read on this site

Oil top up

Still no reply to my generous offer of an oil level check for a tenner, my accountant went mad and says I must charge at least £11.00. for level checks (you supply the oil).
dave ( all my life I give you nuffing still you ask for more) GS.

Thanks for the offer but I have always felt confident checking the oil level - thats how I knew when to take the bike in.

Basically, I ride, clean and check the bike. I do not do any work on the bike in case of any warranty issues.

Thanks
