My brother bought an SA and now I'm tempted to the orange side...

One or two of the items I mentioned wouldn't be an issue, but when spending £17/£18k on a bike, if a manufacturer is offering a lesser spec'd bike, it should be priced accordingly.

I wont be paying £17/£18K ;)

With all due respect, bullshit :D

The SA has better suspension, a better engine, better handling and is better put together/has a better quality finish.

That all come for free does it?

Farkles or a better bike, mmmmmmmmmmm let me think...........

Oh and of course the KTM is Orange and that's priceless :P

Andres

And anyway it DOES have LED lights, proper DRL LED lights. Oh, and silly little cornering light thingies................ does that make it more desirable? :D

The SA isn't 17-18k it's just less than 16k or less. Add £100 for full led headlight conversion and £250 for quick shift. The rest you can keep like the keyless and as I said it doesn't need integrated gps as the dash has all the info. Integrated gps is quite nice though I will give you that but it's a hefty premium to be payed for it.

I would rather keep the cash and have a tremendous engine, suspension and brakes. Each to their own though.

If it's so much better, why isn't it outselling the GS?:augie

As for the finish being better quality, pop along to Premier Bikes in Didcot, and look at the finish on a couple of their demonstrators, then tell me how good it is.:thumb

It is outsold by the GS because BMW have brain washed most of the general public in believing that there is nothing else on the market and spend so much on advertising and giving magazines enough money to keep printing how awesome they are they cant give a true reflection or comparison on them both, the ride magazine article proves that.

If you have bought a bike because of the Sat nav some spot lights and keyless entry more fool you, i bough the SA because i thought it was the better bike, it rode better, it sat nicer on the road, its quicker, has all the gadgets i need and more.

The BMW has a better switch gear the sat nav is great but is just a sat nav, keyless entry will cause more issues than it solves, does it even solve an issue? and quick shifter, never had a bike with it, have rode a few but the KTM box is so good i clutchles shift anyway.

Don’t fool yourself with BMW build quality, every demo bike I have ever ridden or 2nd hand bike is rust, I had to work hard on my GSA to keep it minty and the KTM seems easier to keep clean with no rust spots seen yet and I ride all weathers.

You pay your money you take your chance.

There are no dealers and unproven resale which holds the big Ktm back. BMW have a dealer or two covering most areas and are masters at demo bikes and enticing pcps. To be honest most of the toys mean jack shit, I'd prefer the basic ride to be the main pull.

The above is slightly playing devils advocate as I've gone for a GSA LC, it just suits me, it's quite quick, I kinda like em , the bike has been reliable, n the dealer has looked after me....so staying loyal for now.

I have a dilemma with my KTM too, the choke lever is getting a little loose, do you think I should tighten it slightly? :D

Sigh ....

Nutty ... you really do need a good kicking :D

Close your eyes and imagine Clarkson doing a review on two cars. It's the usual theme, one is 'better' than the other, has more 'specs', more gadgets for your money, the switch gear is refined, the interior is classy ...... and then in his usual style he draws the review to an end by selling you that last minute dummy and concludes that actually he wouldn't have this classy car, but he'd rather have the other because of ... etc etc

The GS has all the gadgets. It's luggage knocks spots off the shite KTM bread bins, its LED headlight is good, it now has some fandangled emergency brake light (Ooooooo !!), It's shaft, it doesn't get an oily back wheel .... the list goes on and on.

BUT IT'S NOT A FUCKING BIKERS BIKE !!!!!!!!!!!! :rob

Like Clarkson, whilst all those things are super dooper and lovely, there is only one thing that really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, (if you're a fucking biker Nutty ..!!!!) and that my friend, is how it speaks to you when you ride it.

Close your eyes again Nutty, in your imagination perch yourself on your GS / GSA and hit the starter button. I'm doing it too!

Nah .... nothing. I have no stirring in my bollocks, and the hairs on my neck are asleep as the clatter of the GS does nothing for me. Yep, it's nice and quick, comfy, reasonable suspension .... but ..... mneh? is that it????

But if I close my eyes, sit on the 1190R, and hit the start button, Oh yeah .... I get it. The hairs on my neck come alive, my bollocks stir, I grin to myself, and I know that I'm about to spend the next hour or so utterly committed, in a passionate embrace of man and machine bonding together. I GET THE BIKE! Dont ask me how they do it - I haven't got a fucking clue, but it talks to me, it has a character, a soul, It engages with me, It is an absolute joy to ride, and yet .... it's made of the same materials as a new GS. When I spank it, it laughs! The bike laughs out loud and goes YEEEEE FUCKING HAR when I wheelie out of a roundabout. The way it modulates it's brakes / gears / suspension ..... they all gel together to make your favourite road utterly intoxicating to ride.

Have you seen Rossi cuddle his bike?!! He often strokes the front on the return to the pits after a race, there is a bond he has with it! He loves it! There is a connection there. To him, that bike is not just a machine.

My rant isn't about how great the KTM is, fuck - there are (some) other brilliantly involving bikes out there. But there are also some fucking fridges out there!! Brilliantly functional, but bugger all soul. My rant is brought on by the mindset, that one bike is better than another because it has more gadgets!!! Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!! :anger

Given the choice, I, like Clarkson, want the passion. I want the character. I want the soul, I want a bike that makes my bollocks stir, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Learn that Nutty FFS :rob : !!!!!

I get your points, I really do. I've ridden the 1190R, and now the 1290, and they are great bikes, but as an all round package, there's something lacking (for me). Everyone in the KTM section gets very defensive whenever I comment, it's as if I'm saying the bikes are crap. I'm not. They are fantastic bikes, but not for me. Yet.

And, yes, if I want to ride a bike that does everything you describe above, I take the XR out!:D

I don't believe for a minute that the GS sells in the volumes it does, because BMW "brain washes" the public, or that people don't think there is anything else out there. With the number of bike magazines/ forums, the public has more access to information on other bikes than they ever have.

I don't buy GS's just because they have the features I listed, they are great to have, but are one of the many reasons why I go for the GS every time.

Keyless ride, no issues reported to date, and even if there were one or two issues, a large number of bikes registered have it, so there may be one or two at some point. I don't need to tell you the benefits of the QS here, as there are many posts/ threads on here about how good it is.

Don't judge BMW build quality by ex demo or second hand bikes, as you don't know how they were looked after. I'm on my third LC GS, and haven't had any issues with rust or build quality (apart from a replaced centre stand). I ride all year round, and haven't used ACF50 on any of my LC GS's.

Nothing I love more than people giving out advice on bikes they have never owned..........

I did pop along to Premier Bikes, and found their salesman to be uninterested in selling to me. I also went to the Honda dealer in Abingdon, because I was considering a Crossdresser, and found the salesman there to be equally uninterested.
I went to the BMW dealer and found them to be professional and keen to sell to me. I do like the integrated satnav, and other fripperies; I think the gearbox is shit and the gearshift assist I could do without; I think the engine is crude, but plenty fast enough; I commute all year, so I'm glad about led lighting and asc and abs and flashing brake lights. But most of all I like having a dealer who gives a toss.
There are many reasons people end up with the bikes they ride, some less obvious than others

Yep thats right, there are loads of magazines for all bikes, go read any of them i bet you can find either a picture of a BMW or it being referred to in about 30% of of the magazine in some way or other. All of which get paid loads in advertising by the way, they possibly couldn't be honest if anything was wrong.

"I don't buy GS's just because they have the features I listed, they are great to have, but are one of the many reasons why I go for the GS every time."

Im sure there is such as LED Lights, Keyless ignition, If you had said shaft drive, comfort, dealer experience you have a valid argument.

Just so you know, i find my SA really comfy, KTM Verwood have a great atmosphere to it with really friendly staff ect, the coffee machine is not as good as BMW Alton mind and they dont have cake and biscuits!

As for your last coment you are the one who said go look at a KTM dealer to look at build quality on a demo, go figure!

You dont work for BMW by any chance?
